Non HRT hot flush relief

Novella4 · 08/04/2022 09:40

I realise that anyone who doesn’t take HRT is quickly chased off this topic but if anyone is interested here is a double blind trial from
Imperial .
Hot flush relief without hormones for those who can’t take HRT or don’t want to engage with the complicated risk / benefit profile of HRT . Such drugs do exist .

But I assume it's at the trial stage and not yet available.

Do you have more up to date info?

There are also many other drugs available for women who can't take HRT eg if they had breast cancer. Menopause specialists can prescribe these.

FiveShelties · 08/04/2022 10:18

The article is four years old, what has happened to the drug since then, is it available?

JinglingHellsBells · 08/04/2022 10:32

Professor Dhillo explains this specific compound will not be taken further in trials, due to side effects that may affect liver function
However, two very similar drugs, which also block NKB but do not appear to carry these side effects have entered larger patient trials, with one such trial launched in the US last year

@Novella4 If you time and the inclination, google Nick Panay / Hrt/ menopause for youtube videos.

He's a UK consultant /researcher and one video (at least) talks about new products in the pipeline.) He's also very much a fan of HRT (has women in their 80s on it) so you might not like that side of it :)

Novella4 · 08/04/2022 10:40

Hi, I was presenting the link as an example of the sort of research that we dont hear much about . Also as a example of how double blind research is done ( maybe I’m wrong but a previous thread gave me the impression that some posters didn’t t know much about that crucial issue )

Yes @JinglingHellsBells I have heard of Nick Panay - mainly because you mention him every time you post lol !
Why don’t you mention Louse Newson - she seems v popular here?

OP posts:
JinglingHellsBells · 08/04/2022 10:46

I've not mentioned NP for ages but if I had, so what?

You may have name changed as you seen familiar with the forum but I've never seen your name before.

Dr Newson is a GP with menopause training, She is not a researcher nor a consultant gynae . They do different things.

Novella4 · 08/04/2022 10:55

I read the forum from time to time which is why I’m familiar @JinglingHellsBells. Anyone dipping in would see your name as you post daily it seems .
I don’t persist as it’s all v samey - You are stupid if you don’t take HRT ad nauseam.

I looked into your claim that the new non HRT hot flush drug causes liver damage . I found however that two very similar drugs do not have that issue and have built on the initial research .
Did you not come across that information?

Oh I see it was embedded in your quote .
So to those who asked - it looks like a safer alternative is coming down the line for those who want it
More choice - can only be a good thing !

FiveShelties · 08/04/2022 11:04

More choice is definitely a good thing, but how far down the line do you think this is coming.

JinglingHellsBells · 08/04/2022 11:26

You aren't on anywhere else on MN with that username which did make me wonder if you'd changed it.

Yes I pop up here almost daily. Well spotted.

WarriorN · 08/04/2022 11:47

Choice is a good thing, I have two friends who can't take any hrt.

I think there's a general lack of interest in womens health; dr LN said she set up privately as there was simply no nhs funding available to set up what she'd originally hoped to do through nhs.

I'm an hrt evangelist myself; it's also been like an actual antidepressant for me personally. Better than for me. But I know others for whom ads have worked brilliantly.

WarriorN · 08/04/2022 11:49

Essentially, info for women and girls is severely lacking from school onwards.

I know what I know mainly from listening to womens hour from the age of 14; but I honestly thought it would all come in my 50s. It's started in my late 30s looking back.

MrsSkylerWhite · 08/04/2022 11:49

My GP prescribed low dose paroxetine. Flushes and night sweats stopped within 3 days.

WarriorN · 08/04/2022 11:49

^thats exactly what helped a friend.

FiveShelties · 08/04/2022 12:00

@MrsSkylerWhite

My GP prescribed low dose paroxetine. Flushes and night sweats stopped within 3 days.
Is that an anti-depressant? Do you have any side effects with it? I have not heard of it, but am in NZ so perhaps not available here.
MrsSkylerWhite · 08/04/2022 12:52

Yes it is but prescribed at much higher doses for depression. I only take 20mg each day, had no side effects and it’s out of your system as soon as you stop taking it.

I was offered another treatment which is actually a drug for high blood pressure but it was found to eliminate hot flushes too. Bizarrely though, GP told me that as I did not have high blood pressure, it would likely cause it “but we can then treat you die that”. Er, no thanks Grin

MrsSkylerWhite · 08/04/2022 12:52

For, not die!

JinglingHellsBells · 08/04/2022 14:47

If anyone wants a slightly more in depth look at alternatives, they are here.

www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-10561909/Ease-symptoms-menopause-without-hormones.html

Sorry it includes N Panay but as it's the Mail, he's been demoted to a mere Dr not a Mr!

WarriorN · 08/04/2022 20:44

Completely off topic but we had lots of shelties five.

Hard to find now Sad

MrsSkylerWhite · 08/04/2022 20:57

Wishing more were looking at this thread because I’d shout paroxetine from the rooftops. It literally changed my life, in 3 days.
I couldn’t go anywhere for months, I had daytime sweats at least twice every hour, water pouring down my face. I didn’t sleep more than an hour at a time at night for 6 months.
That all ended with my prescription. Thank you, Dr. Grant!
I really wish more women were aware.

The team at The Women's Hospital in Liverpool recommend low dose paroxetine as a non-hormonal alternative. It's good to hear a positive story as some of the recent menopause publicity has convinced many women that any offer of an anti-depressant is "fobbing them off"

Having had breast cancer, HRT wasn’t an option. I’m so, so grateful that my GP was clued up. It was genuinely life-changing.

I started on 10mg which worked well for 6 months or so. Had to up it to 20 thereafter but 2 1/2 years on I’m still symptom free on that dose Smile

They definitely are, I think there are only 2 or 3 breeders in NZ now. Gorgeous dogs Grin
