Bleed/no bleed question

Inmyvillagetoo · 06/04/2022 20:35

Can anyone help?
If you need to take the progesterone for 10/12 days to provide a bleed (stops build up of lining my understanding) why is it ok to have the marina coil that often stops monthly bleeds?
I really hate taking the progesterone part of my cycle(and to be honest I do stretch the weeks in between far,far too much ) but this had me wondering if you can take back to back pills, have the hormone coil, is it really so bad?

The mirena has a much smaller amount of progesterone but is constantly released so keeps the lining very thin hence none or very light periods, I love the mirena and have been using it for HRT for years along with patches. The big advantage for me has been no bleeds/periods for 15 years!
Sorry don't know much about taking oral progesterone but hopefully someone more knowledgeable will be along to answer your question.

As above ^

If you are at least 12 months past your own periods, you can take progesterone daily (so no bleeding once it all settles down) OR you could ask for the Mirena coil (at any stage of using HRT.)

How long are you stretching your cycle with no progesterone?

I am an absolute hormonal ,irrational, tearful mess when I take progesterone so certainly would not like to take daily. In truth I’ve not taken any progesterone for 10 months because it honestly makes me borderline suicidal it’s that bad it scares me how it makes me feel even though I tell myself it’s the progesterone and I warn those close to me to remind me it’s just that, I had the coil fitted many years ago but had it taken out after three weeks as made me feel the same with the paranoia of thinking I was being poisoned from the inside. I don’t understand why it seems t9 have such an extreme effect on me but it clearly does. So was just wondering how’bad’ not having a bleed would be given no bleeds on back to back pills or the coil in many cases.

Sorry I should add, in case it makes a difference I have two pumps of Esterogel daily, mainly for what I think were VA symptoms and night sweats.

It's my understanding that you have to take progesterone alongside eostrogen whilst taking HRT as it protects against womb cancer so it's really not advisable to miss it. I suggest you speak to your gp or menopause specialist about this.

Inmyvillagetoo · 07/04/2022 20:52

I think I need to try and get to see meno specialist privately. Getting a GP appointment is still tricky at my surgery, let alone getting a lucky chance with a GP who can help. Anyone know of any specialist in Hertfordshire area?

@Inmyvillagetoo Please see your dr.

If you have not used progesterone for 10 months your womb lining will be thick. If this is not reduced, it can turn to cancer. You MUST take some type of progesterone to shed your lining now.

Please don't carry on using estrogen-only as you are.

There are other types and one way to avoid the emotional side effects can be to use it vaginally ( that's Utrogestan- no other type.)

You must be honest with your GP and tell them exactly what you have done. They will send you for an ultrasound scan to assess the lining.

Playdoughcaterpillar · 07/04/2022 20:56

Agree with above, OP unopposed oestrogen is dangerous. You need to progesterone to prevent your endometrium thickening and increasing the risk of cancer. A mirena keeps the endometrium thin throughout the month and stops any bleeding. If it's more that a year since your last period you can take continous progesterone orally and not have a period. If you do that earlier in your menopause then you are more likely to have breakthrough bleeding hence the cyclical progesterone instead, to shed the lining like a normal cycle.

TinaWeymouthsBass · 07/04/2022 20:58

Omg as above poster has said you must see your GP straight away and get an ultrasound, oestrogen without progesterone is really dangerous.

Where are you in Herts? (It's a biggish county) You could try looking at the websites of local private hospitals, but London is more likely to have more specialists. You can try looking at the British Menopause Society website under SPECIALISTS and search by location.

You will have to pay for a scan if you go privately- the dr would refer you to someone to do that. They are around £250. Consultant fees are similar.

It looks as if you have not understood what progesterone does. Hopefully the posters above will have explained it :)
In back to back pills and the Mirena, they both contain a type of progestin.
That stops the lining from growing (it's like putting the fire out with a hose pipe !)

Estrogen makes it grow- progesterone stops it. If it is used on a cycle, the lining is shed after the last tablet. Then the cycle starts over.

If it's used daily, the lining never builds up (so no blood to come away.)
