Just moaning to you lovely lot , I'm sick of having periods , I'm 57 , when does the bleeding and cramping stop ?
I've been on hrt since 50 but still haven't stopped bleeding every 28 days like a teenager .
Tell me I'm not on my own surely I should have stopped by now . I'm sat here with back ache and belly ache feeling really sorry for myself 😩

If you are using a sequential type of HRT, They aren't periods. It's a withdrawal bleed. An artificial bleed to clear the lining.

You can ask your dr to swap you to a no bleed type as long as your own natural periods stopped for at least 12 months which at 57 they will have.

I'm nearly 58, and am still on sequential, as when I tried continuous (when I started HRT at 56) my own cycle broke through. It's not a given that women don't have periods at this age. The 'average' age is just that, an average. Some women will be younger and some older.

I appreciate that some women choose to carry on with sequential @BatshitCrazyWoman. I am a LOT older than you and still use it for the same reasons (didn't like continuous and there is lower risk of some things with sequential.)

However, I had the impression that the OP didn't appreciate that her type of HRT gives a bleed. At 57, is it likely she is still having periods 'on the dot' every 28 days? It's more likely it's her HRT withdrawal bleed. Only way to find out is to stop HRT and see.

@JinglingHellsBells @BatshitCrazyWoman @ Thank you for your replies . I wasn't aware that i would still be bleeding on this type of HRT . I remember being told by the doctor at 50 that when the bleeding stopped to go back and my prescription would be changed . That's what led to my question , I really don't want to be bleeding at this age with the associated stomach pain's, I was up for 2 hours last night with awful cramps .
I think it's a visit to the doctors to discuss options as like many others I've not seen a doctor for over 2 years .
Thanks again for your help 😊

Yes OP, it's worth going back and trying continuous. I plan to have a go in the summer, because I'd prefer not to have any bleeding. My thoughts were I prefer the regularity of bleeding on a sequential regime to the weird irregularity I was getting when I tried continuous first. At 56, I'd gone 9 months without a period, before I started HRT.

I’m on continuous HRT because I was sick of the bleed on sequential. It was really heavy and really painful.

I still have a monthly bleed unfortunately, but it’s much lighter and not painful.

@JinglingHellsBells @BatshitCrazyWoman @ArtVandalay . Thank you ladies , I took your advice I got a phone consultation with the doctor and changed over to the conti so I'm going to see how that suits me .

My periods finally stopped at the age of 59 1/2! That was after 6 years of flooding, clots, periods that lasted 2 or 3 weeks, endless womb biopsies, scans, hormone tablets. You have my sympathies.

BeerLoas · 24/04/2022 21:18

I’m just starting my menopause journey but you have my sympathies. Thinking I’m staring down the barrel of another 15 years of these shenanigans isn’t great. Hope you get it sorted!

Mine carried on well past then. I had a Mirena fitted to control the bleeding.

The oldest natural conception and birth recorded was a woman of 59, so even pregnancy is (remotely) possible. Here’s an article about Dawn Brooke and her child. It also mentions an American woman who gave birth at 57.
