Should I get the mirena coil?

Hi there. I'm only in my early 40s but I've had perimenopausal symptoms for almost ten years. I really wish the menopause would just hurry up. I've had some symptoms of PCOS but I'm told my LH isn't high enough for it to be PCOS. I had bad hormonal acne for about 8 years that is just clearing now, thankfully.

It's driving me crazy to be honest. My periods have been excruciating since Day 1 and since I came off the pill ten years ago, the pain is back. Worse than that though and much harder to manage is the PMT. I had severe depression as a teenager which was hormone related and I was treated with the pill and other hormonal non-contraceptive concoctions before that.

I've never had a proper diagnosis of anything. I finally got an appointment with a gynaecologist and she suggested the mirena coil. She said it will stop my periods, therefore stop the pain and the PMT. Is this the case? Did this happen for any of you before you went into menopause? I'm at the end of my tether. Thanks.

It was wonderful for stopping my periods but turned me into a v v angry woman, hated sex and if I hadn't had it out I would have probably ended my marriage. It doesn't just affect you physically!

Honestly just fed up with being a woman and having such a badly designed body.

Have you considered Endometrial ablation. it worked very well for me.

@JustBeQuietWontYouPlease

Tbh I find the PMS harder to handle than the period pain. Very concerned about the coil. Fed up with it all!

I had the Mirena fitted last November, took the plunge as had just had enough of heavy, big clotty and very painful periods (I'd be taking co-codemol for the first 2 days of period every month), plus not feeling comfortable going out during those heavier 2 days.

I took the plunge after seeing my PMT go from fairly low level to upset/raging/anxious over really little things that even I'd look back on afterwards wondering why I'd got like that 🙈 and figuring I'm likely in peri as early 40's.

It's been life changing and honestly wish I'd done it sooner... yes fitting was uncomfortable (and know it's very bad for some women), but:

  • spotting now finished
  • I have maybe 2 days very light bleed (the lightest pant liner is enough)
  • NO PAIN!!! 😊
  • PMT symptoms have vanished 😊

It was defo the right time for me with peri and I aim to keep it and boost with HRT when needed.

Thanks @Suzysuz

It’s the PMDD in particular that I’m concerned about … i feel it has got out of hand with peri but my whole life has been ruled by PMDD. I just want to be free from it all. A few years ago I wanted a baby so badly that I couldn’t imagine wanting menopause to come but now, I’d happily go into early menopause but I seem to be peri-ing for almost a decade despite supposedly having ‘premature ovarian collapse.’

It’s great it worked so well for you @Suzysuz I get a lot of pelvic pain. Even a smear hurts and I screamed during the endometrial sample procedure.

Is there any option of anaesthetic/sedative during the fitting of a mirena ?

Hi all, I’ve just signed consent to have the Mirena Coil fitted at the same time I have a polyp removed. I’ve been advised to get it for the progesterone part of HRT along with the Estriol cream. I’m going for my pre assessment appointment on Monday but I really feel (after my daughter advised me not to get & all the horror stories I’m reading) to withdraw my consent! Any advice would be very much appreciated!🙏🏼

It works amazingly for some people @PaulajJay the only way to know us to give it a try. What I didn't like was that I was made to feel that I was wrong for not getting on with it, as if it's infallible and there are no side effects.
