As the title says what age did you go through menopause?
Also was it around the same age as your mother? If you know and how long from the start of peri menopause had you reached menopause and what were symptoms?

OP posts:

  1. My mum was around 50 and my sister is 41 and hasn't been through it yet.
Flanjango · 11/03/2022 23:25

48 and just over a year since last menstruation, though was almost a year since last one. Going through "the change"
for over ten years prior. It's amazing not having those monthlies 😁

Flanjango · 11/03/2022 23:26

Oh and mum had to have ablation as she had fibroids but tbh she was almost the same age when her periods stopped.

  1. Full menopause. Thank God I had a child early
Changeychangey · 11/03/2022 23:35

Periods became very irregular (like 2-3 times a year) and much heavier at about 40. Other peri symptoms slowly over 10 years (never went to the doctor as didn't bother me until recently) and at 51 I'm now on hrt patches.

No idea about my mum as we've not spoken for 15 years but I do know both my grandmother and aunt on my dads side had menopause from about 40, so I assume I'm the same. My aunt has been very supportive.

@Hbh17

Not sure that "peri" is a real thing, so never actually thought about it. Menopause seemingly from 56 - still not 100% sure, but seems likely.
You're not sure peri is a real thing? Probably quite a few here who would beg to differ, myself included, not to mention a few doctors !
ClariceQuiff · 11/03/2022 23:46

Surgical menopause at 42 - both ovaries and womb removed, so menopause hit me like a ton of bricks.

50 peri menopausal and on HRT which Was a game changer! My mum had no symptoms and neither does my 52 year old sister.

Scarby9 · 12/03/2022 00:29

49/50

MoiraQ · 12/03/2022 00:38

My periods stopped for about 5mths at 51, I had very mild menopausal symptoms. Then I had the covid vaccine in April, periods came back, awful joint pain, sore breasts, hot flushes etc. Still having periods at 52, I'm now taking HRT too. My Mum's periods stopped at 45, not many symptoms although she still has some issues now at 72.

I've been in perimenopause since my mid forties. It is very definitely a real thing, to the pp who doubted it. I am 55 now and struggled for 10 years with very heavy flooding periods which absolutely refused to stop until a six month course of Zoladex injections was used recently to shut down my very stubborn ovaries. Mirena coil had made things much, much worse.

No periods now since about last August so I am hoping they are gone for good now.

My mother had her menopause in her late fifties.

33 after hysterectomy and oophorectomy.
I was on HRT then as full-blown menopause was pretty awful 😢

caringcarer · 12/03/2022 02:10

Peri menopause at 45 periods flooding and went on for getting worse for about 4 years. Instead of period lasting 5 or 6 days, everything came away in 3 days where I was changing tampons/pads every 20 mins. Menopause at 52. Lots of unpleasant symptoms hot sweats, brain fog, tearful for no reason, put on weight around waist. Now 60 and really only just got rid of symptoms in last year, all except can't lose weight around waist.

Justilou1 · 12/03/2022 03:03

42

MondeoFan · 12/03/2022 08:08

49 and peri. Periods infrequent, itchy skin, dry skin, grumpy and joints aching, weight going on all around my middle

JackieWeaversZoomAc · 12/03/2022 23:44

I'm 54 & have had some peri symptoms- my period is still pretty regular though the covid vaxs messed with things a bit.

My mum was early 50's.

oviraptor21 · 12/03/2022 23:47

53ish.
Mum had a hysterectomy in her 40s followed by HRT so no idea.
Sister never speaks about it so no idea there either!

JinglingHellsBells · 13/03/2022 07:47

Interesting that quite a lot of posters here were so young ( early-mid 40s).

(Hope you have all been advised of the risks to your bones and were put on HRT to 50 at least.)

My gran, mum and me were all over 50 - between 50 and 53.

@Dirtystreetpie

Does anyone know is there actually an accurate test you can take to tell if you really are in peri?
Yes, you can have a blood test
Plumbmonster · 13/03/2022 14:17

I’m 48 and firmly in peri although my periods are regular at 27 days on the dot each time.

I’m very often shaky and anxious.
I sleep really badly
Weight piling on
Libido absolutely dead in the water
Allergies are awful, regularly have hives, sinus issues and tinnitus
Joints are achy and stiff
I’m irritable and annoyed by very little
Did I say I was shaky and anxious - I worry over everything, everything seems like a huge effort, there’s very little joy left in anything.

Is it worth asking for HRT as I’m still menstruating?

Yes is is- this was me. I could have written your post. Age 48 as well. I asked HRT and the GP confirmed it was ok. I am on femoston and it has really helped
Plumbmonster · 13/03/2022 16:25

Oh Clarabe this is positive. How do you take it? Is it a patch, tablet?

What exactly improved and how long did it take? Any side effects?

How do they know what hormones are skewiff? I don’t want to be prescribed something that will make it all worse
