Am I going to bleed to death?

Seema1234 · 08/03/2022 22:15

Warning - before I get numpties telling me to call 999 the title is tongue in cheek, but an accurate description of how I feel.

Age 48, apart from a bit of insomnia I've been ok with perimenopause. Cycle reduced from 28 to 21 days which I considered annoying. But what I didn't know was what my uterus had planned next. I've been on my period for a whole month. 28 days of bleeding. What fresh hell is this and why did I know this was a thing ?

I have a GP appointment tomorrow. What should I be expecting ? Ask for?

Everytime I think the thing has gone , it comes back again. How is it possible to bleed this much and not be dead?

And if DH tells me one more time how tired he is I will scream..

The stuff they gave me to stop the bleeding hasn't worked. Today it got worse. GP appointment in 2 weeks, that's the earliest they can see me apparently. At what point should I go to hospital ? I can't possible be left to bleed for another 2 weeks. So fed up now. Trying to put on a brave face but worrying myself silly with Dr Google and cancer stories. Very tearfulSad

It slowed down a few days ago which o told DH. I don't want to tell him it's back again as I don't want to worry him. I just feel so yuck. It's awful.

Why won't they give me progesterone to stop it? That's what I keep reading. I can't go on like this.

I'm really sorry to hear things are not better for you.

I don't know if you are in UK but at this point I would suggest a private appointment with a gynaecologist.
I understand this may not be possible but an initial consultation is around £200 and once done the consultant can refer you back to your GP but with some answers.

This is what I had to do and honestly, scraping together that money was the wisest move I could have made.

Seema1234 · 12/03/2022 20:34

Thank you, I think I'm going to do that. I can't stand this. I genuinely think I'll be barely standing if I'm left like this for another 2 weeks. They said they won't refer me to the hospital until they've seen me so that could be weeks after the GP appointment. I'll be dead by then.

Sad to say, private appointments can be a short cut to the help you need.
When I went to see a private for an initial consultation, they sent me straight into the hospital. They literally called the ward and told them to admit me for emergency treatment.

Obviously, I don't know that will happen for you but I do know that once you have a consultants name on your records things do seem to happen more quickly.

I know how frustrated and exhausted you must feel. I genuinely hope you get the help you need soon Flowers

Thank you

I don’t know why you couldn't be prescribed progestogen- I have already had a biopsy and 2 scans so maybe that is why my Dr felt able to - and she knew I have got a hysteroscopy booked.

I honestly don't know what I would have done otherwise - I think I would have had to go to A and E . Even with the progestogen I had horrendous cramps but at least stopped thinking I was going to pass out, and a few days later the bleeding has pretty much stopped.

I hope you can get some concrete help soon.

housecommon · 13/03/2022 19:37

OP my GP also wouldn't prescribe anything until I'd had the scans / tests done.
If the bleeding is still really heavy I would ring 111 and ask them for further advice.

Lurking9to5 · 13/03/2022 20:02

Id call 112 at this point. You have bleeding for weeks and the mefoxxxxx ? doesn't work :-/

Roundeartheratchriatmas · 13/03/2022 20:17

Honestly I would go to a hospital if it’s got worse and explain your GP will not see you.

DatingDinosaur · 13/03/2022 20:25

OP, heavy bleeding that won't stop can be caused by iron deficiency. If that's the case with you, once your iron levels are normal again, you might find your endless Flow Of Doom stops.

There's a reason women of the Olden Days used to drink Stout and eat Pilchards - they're full of B vitamins!

If it's any consolation, when the month long spring clean my womb had stopped I didn't have another period for 3 months and, even then, it was just light spotting that only needed a panty liner. There is a God!

MiniDaffodils · 13/03/2022 20:29

HRT OP. It’s brilliant. Really brilliant.

Redannie118 · 13/03/2022 20:34

Do you have a local GUM clinic? When my adult stepdaughter was bleeding like a fountain due to hormone imbalance and the GP did naff all, she turned up there, was seen within an hour and saw an amazing nurse who gave her transamic acid, changed her BC, did bloods and booked her in for scans the following week. Easier to get into than A and E and tgey wont fob you off.

Dahlia444 · 13/03/2022 20:44

Just to say for my 2-month continous bleeding my GP has recommended everything identical to yours OP. The only difference being was that she saw me the same day for the pelvic check. She also did the infection swabs and I had bloods the following day. Have now been referred for scan. She also said she'd prefer no medication etc until after scan unless it becomes worse. I'd get back onto GP to see if they can see you earlier than two weeks.

Seema1234 · 13/03/2022 20:58

Thank you all. I am frantic with worry as I keep reading about cancer. I haven't had a smear test for years (I know, I know) and keep reading horror stories about cervical cancer or uterine cancer.

I'd like HRT so will ask them about that. I have to cancel the appointment for a few weeks as I'd forgotten I'm in court that day (work). There's no way I can move that date. Great tip about the GUM clinic I might try that.

The bleeding has slowed down today but is still there. I also keep getting a sharp intermittent pain low in my pelvis , but think I'm focussing on every twinge. I would do anything to be a man right now. Hmm

I bled so heavily I became tachycardic and ended up in resus. I d been back and for to my GP for months and kept getting fobbed off. It turned out I had cervical polyps and once those were removed my bleeding normalised.
Im on HRT now and have a very light monthly bleed. It's bliss.

Seema1234 · 13/03/2022 21:06

@DatingDinosaur. That's interesting as I must be anemic by now.I've been overwhelmed with anxiety and the doom gloom. Totally convinced I'm dtinf which is not like me, but a low iron would make you feel like that.

I've just looked at my cycle for the last 6 months. All random with gaps of 17 days to 35 days , but the pattern is ever increasing gaps until this one. That's made me think it must be hormonal.

TellySavalashairbrush · 13/03/2022 21:09

Op, both my mum and older sister had exactly the same symptoms as you in their late 40s, it turned out fibroids. My sister literally used to have to tuck a bath towel down their trousers as it was so severe. She jumped at the chance of having a hysterectomy a few years later.
Doing internals and taking swabs is just standard procedure. Difficult as it is, try not to panic and stop looking on Dr Google!

Seema1234 · 13/03/2022 21:14

Thank you @OverByYer. It's madness that GPs think we can be left to bleed for weeks on end. I asked the doctor Joe I can still be bleeding. I can't get my head round it. If I cut my arm or leg and was bleedings for weeks someone would do something. But apparently as it's my fanjo it's fine. Hmm These are probably the same people who reckon you only lose a tablespoon of blood each month.

OP posts:
Seema1234 · 13/03/2022 21:14

Joe was meant to be 'how'

OverByYer · 13/03/2022 21:22

If you are passing clots and still bleeding heavily , maybe go to a& E tomorrow? IT really is shit what we have to put up with. I hope you get sorted soon.

Lurking9to5 · 14/03/2022 09:14

I agree, at this point it's ridiculous, you've been bleeding for weeks. If this was a man bleeding from a wound he'd go to A&E if it wouldn't stop bleeding and the he'd contacted the doctor and the doctor had said no, first you must be tested for blah before I can give you the drug that will stop the bleeding. That man would go to A&E, but because we're women we just get on with it in private. But there comes a point where that is ridiculous. I went to A&E once, with a period. I'd had a hysteroscopy years ago and the period after that procedure was unbelievably painful. The paramedics were very kind to me, they could see I was GREY. They knew I wasn't wasting their time and even though they were two young men, I was glad to be taken to hospital because all I could think was this isn't normal, this isn't normal, this isn't normal.

GlitterBiscuits · 16/03/2022 17:57

How are you now @Seema1234 ?Any sign of it stopping?
I'm 'enjoying' a three week period and can't even get the GP surgery to put me on the waiting list for a phone call from the nurse, which is the only way of getting hold of anyone!

Tranexamic Acid isn't helping me

Seema1234 · 17/03/2022 04:14

Still going, but down to a trickle. I think I
'm on week 5.Hmm I can't see my GP for another 2 weeks as I need to examined and she's working 'remotely: next week. Why the hell a NHS Dr is working at home so her skills cannot be accessed is beyond me.
