Hormonal migraines

Hi everyone
I have being having awful migraines in the lead up to my period every month for quite a while now. At the moment I am just taking pain relief but I’m getting fed up of really struggling for 3-7 days every month so have booked an appointment with my GP next week.
Given my age (44) I’m thinking that I may be in Peri which I believe can make hormonal migraines worse. Can anyone advise on what I should push for if the GP isn’t helpful? I was reading about patches and gel which sound like they might be helpful although as I am still having regular periods are they likely to suggest the pill/coil instead? Any information or experiences would be gratefully received. Thank you.

Sumatrapin 50mg. I take 1 at the very first sign of a migraine. Life changing for me.

I take well women vitamins and fever few in the run up to my period and during it. It's massively helped the headaches.

Hi @Castlecould. Patches and tablets - body identical hrt have really really helped with my perimenopause migraines. Estradot patches for oestrogen plus Utrogestan tablets for two wks of my cycle. There are other brands but those were what was prescribed for me. If you look up Dr Louise Newson (NewsonHealth) she has loads of really useful information about what might work and perimenopause in general. It's a minefield and a change that happens to all of us but people are only speaking about it in more recent times. Best of luck with it.

Regular magnesium has helped hugely for me. Good luck OP, it really sucks.

I did too, every month without fail. I'm 43. Started hrt and since being in them (3months) not had one. I think it's the drop in oestrogen which can trigger them. I now have a patch and take tablets

I had the same, but as I had erratic bleeds for years (20+ random days every month) and had a hormonal migraine before each, I was permanently either with a migraine or in the recovery fog after one. I spent 3-4 days a week mostly in bed because of the migraines. These totally stopped when I started on HRT (evorel sequi/conti). It so annoys me now to think of all the years I wasted like that, because my GP at the time never suggested HRT to me, even thought I went to see him many times with what I now realise were so many classic peri symptoms. It took a change in GP surgery for me to get HRT sorted and the migraines fixed.

My GP recommended super complex vitamin b daily. It's a high dose. Definitely helped me.
Also recommended 3 aspirin as soon as a headache/migraine started & if possible go to bed.

Had one yesterday, and found a jar of tiger balm
At work so tried that. Omg it's miraculous!

YellowHpok · 16/03/2022 07:34

Yep. I take 900mg aspirin at the very first sign and it takes about 5 days off each migraine, stops it in its tracks.

I'm 39 and waiting on bloods for FSH levels as strong history of early meno. I'm after some HRT for my brain fog and general sense of falling apart.

My GP was really helpful

Magnesium helped mine. Now I rarely have one.
