Hi - I had an appointment last week with the practice nurse at my GP surgery about starting HRT.

From reading on here I asked for Utrogestan tablets and gel, but she had never heard of Utrogestan and was keen for me to try patches. I didn't really want patches so she went to ask a GP about Utrogestan. She came back saying I could have it but was telling me it would be a completely different dosing regime than I had read about, and so I didnt really feel confident with proceeding. I agreed to try the patches first and have been given Evorel Sequi.

My first question is - my periods are becoming more irregular and my last one was before Christmas - is it ok to just put the first patch on now?

Also - what happens with periods - will I have a bleed during the time the progesterone patch is on?

Thanks for any help - I felt I had used up my appointment time discussing the different types of HRT and left without asking the questions I realised after that I should have asked, but just want to be aware of what to expect.

I don't understand what you mean by this. What did your dr mean when she said it was 'different' to what you had read? The way to use it is on the patient leaflet in the box of tablets.

It's quite simple to use Utrogestan. You use gel every single day, then for 12 days per month, use 2 capsules a day of Utrogestan. This is to mimic a natural cycle. Most women use Utrogestan on the same day like the 1st of each month.

With your patch you can start anytime if you aren't having regular periods. You will get a withdrawal bleed (period) after 4 weeks. You MAY get other bleeds that are your own periods, breaking through. It's hard to tell :) Eventually, you will find the HRT resets your cycles as your periods get further apart.
