HRT and conceiving anyone? (Perimenopause)

I've been told I can / should go on HRT by a consultant. I'm 42 and had a baby at 40. I feel all the peri symptoms and feel that HRT would help. However I am hoping that I might be able to have another baby. Just waiting to get my DD into nursery before starting TTC later this year. I know I might not conceive and not pinning all my hopes on it but going to give it a go.

Should I wait to start HRT? I've had conflicting advice on this. Going to go back to GP for another opinion but interested if anyone on here has ever been on HRT and then conceived? One GP told me that there is no issue, and another one said that the HRT would "mess my hormones up" and so I should complete my family before starting.

Any experiences here?

I should clarify, periods are still regular and when tested FSH levels good, but these can fluctuate.

To be honest, I doubt this is in a GP's experience - shown by the two opinions you have had!

If you are seriously wanting another child, it might be better to speak to a gynaecologist who works with fertility and menopause (there are some - including mine!)

They could run some simple blood tests to check your ovarian reserves and your own hormone levels. You'd have to do this privately, so it depends on your finances.

In terms of ovarian reserves, I'm not sure why I would need to know that though? In the sense that, either I get pregnant or I don't. I won't keep on trying after a year. The question is over whether I continue feeling shit or start HRT in the meantime?

I conceived whilst on HRT. However, I only took HRT for 2 weeks a month (from ovulation until my period arrived). My gynaecologist advised that HRT can delay ovulation so I had to be careful not to use it until I had ovulated. Once I got a message positive pregnancy test I just stopped taking it.

Sorry about “message”. My phone likes to auto insert random words.

Ah ok. I assumed you might keep trying to around 45 and it would have been helpful to know if you had a good chance or not.

I think you need to speak to a fertility expert on this.

Breathe57848 · 07/02/2022 17:46

@PurBal did you commence HRT knowing you might TTC? And did you say that to the GP? Was the 2 week course prescribed because you were TTC?

Sorry for all the questions!!

@PurBal I am also interested in this. When you say you took HRT for two weeks after ovulation, was this progesterone only?

PurBal · 10/02/2022 14:24

@Breathe57848 @SparrowSG

Sorry for not replying. I was on Evorel 100 patches. I knew I would want to TTC and this is something I discussed with the gynaecologist beforehand. No, I was still ovulating but having undesirable symptoms so the HRT was to even out my hormone levels over the course of the month. Not strictly peri menopausal (I was in active threads and hadn’t clocked the menopause board, sorry) so not sure if it would be different for others but I found the gynaecologist really helpful. Also checked my egg reserve prior to TTC.

Hi, just wondering what the outcome was on this and if you had success with TTC? I know this is a year on from when the thread began. I’m now facing a similar situation myself and wondering what to do! Thanks in advance.

Can you DM me your gynae? I need exactly this. One that deals with fertility and peri menopause. Thanks!

Are you able to send details of your gynae? Thanks
