Hysteroscopy for bleeding

RoseyOldCrow · 02/02/2022 11:30

As part of a current investigation into bleeding on HRT ( inc possible but staristically unlikely ovarian cancer ) a transvaginal ultrasound has shown a I've got a small (1cm) fibroid & a small (1cm) solid ovarian mass, possibly a dermoid cyst. Apparently the next step is a hysteroscopy & biopsy with possible removal or treatment whilst they are in there.

Bluntly, I'm scared. ( To make matters worse, I also have other chronic, complex metabolic conditions which need to be managed very carefully during any procedure.)

Does anyone have any experience or advice, please?

Sorry to hear this. I've had some experience of it and can only try to reassure you that anything really bad is unlikely.

I don't think anyone would remove a 1cm fibroid. That's tiny and won't be doing any harm.

I would assume they could see more of the cyst and know what kind it is? I can't see how they would remove an ovarian cyst with a hysteroscopy- it's usually done by keyhole.

I had a cyst (and I use HRT) which was found and it was classed as 'simple/ fluid filled) when I was early 50s (post meno.) It was 'watched' and monitored every 4 months, for 2 years. It didn't grow and in the end it went away.

I meant to add that they can usually tell what kind of cyst it is if the consultant is an expert. Ideally you need a scan by a gynae consultant who specialises in ovarian tumours- benign or otherwise. They can tell a huge amount from a scan without having to start digging around.

The guidance from the RCOG is that small cysts which yours is, can be left and monitored (called watchful waiting).

They can take a sample of the lining of your womb during a hysteroscopy but not, to my knowledge, remove cysts on the ovary.

I just had this done 2 weeks ago. Also have fibroids buy a bit bigger than ours.
Was also quite nervous but it was absolutely ok. A bit uncomfortable- so take 2 paracetamol before the appointment. It's a small tube inserted into the uterus- you hardly feel that. It's the biopsy part that stings a little. But then it's done.
The nurses were lovely and caring. I only bled for a day or 2 .
Made me feel quite delicate after though. Wish I'd had DHH to drive me home afterwards. Xx

Just wanted to send you some virtual support.

I’m having a hysteroscopy on Friday due to bleeding on HRT. I’m scared too! I had one last April and I was okay. This time, I don’t think I am going to be so lucky from what I can gather from the receptionist, so
Preparing for the worst. I’ve had cancer once, so used to bad news.

I expect you will be okay.

My mum had a dermoid cyst and had full hysterectomy. She is fine now.

Good luck.

Thank you all for your helpful & reassuring comments; I'm a little calmer now (distracting myself with cake has also helped!) Had CA125 blood test this morning, should get a call back from the GP tomorrow.

@Runaround50 Best wishes for your procedure on Friday, please can you come back & let us know how it went? Hope a virtual slice of my cake helps for now 🍰 x

I had one for polyps which turned out to be non existent. They gave me gas and air as I said I was nervous. I was hammered Grin I had absolutely no after effects at all. I'd taken 2 days off work just in case but felt fine not even any bleeding. I also didn't get a hangover from the gas and air! Try not to build it up to much in your head. As others have said take some painkillers beforehand it is a bit uncomfortable but not to much.

RoseyOldCrow · 06/02/2022 17:22

How was it, @Runaround50 ?

Saw Gynae Nurse on Fri, had internal & am now awaiting call from consultant. Eroded cervix prob explains bleeding after sex; poss colposcopy for a closer look. Otherwise, may be laparoscopy to remove fibroid & dermoid or may be watchful waiting.
All very interesting if a little uncertain.

had hysteroscopy, still bleeding bit, so nervous

Runaround50 · 07/02/2022 17:41

Hi @RoseyOldCrow
What’s the next step for you then?
Do you have a cyst?
It all seems to be “ maybe” for you, doesn’t it?

Well I had my hysteroscopy. Nothing to report. Thin womb lining. No growths.

Started femeston conti last Sunday and have a dull ache in abdomen now!! God knows what that is??

Frankly, I’m sick of all this gynae crap! 😬 If I start bleeding again , I will cry!

RoseyOldCrow · 08/02/2022 21:22

Oh you have my sympathy for those aches, @Runaround50 - is anything helping ease them? It seems like good news otherwise though.

(My DD is just starting her periods, we're learning how effective the traditional remedies of ibuprofen, paracetamol, hot water bottles, carbs & chocolate can be. The 1st & last on that list are most reliable so far!)

Yeah, I really don't know what's going on, tbh, but today I got a letter about a phone appt with a gynae consultant, in a couple of weeks time. I guess I'm going to try to forget about it until then.
