What do I need?

I'm 47, had some peri symptoms for a couple of years but nothing unmanageable. But now my periods have gone haywire and I need to book an appointment with the GP, they're irregular, horrifically heavy and long (last one was 26 days of really heavy bleeding and massive clots) although thankfully not at all painful. I don't want the mini pill or a mirena so is it HRT I need to be discussing? I've read enough to be half expecting to have to fight to get it so don't want to ask for it unnecessarily/too soon. Other symptoms include hot flushes, insomnia, restless legs and mood swings but all mostly manageable, it's just the stupidly long, heavy periods I can't cope with.

Hi it's HRT, it will potentially be the low oestrogen that is causing the majority of your symptoms and if you still have uterus you'll need progesterone.

In my experience the GPs love the Mireya coil and oestrogen gel, but there are many ways to get the two hormones into your body, patches, gels etc.

So for everyone it's different, the dose the method etc, so see what they say? Blood tests are pretty pointless as they only show a snapshot of that one day, the Dutch test is the one you could explore, but your symptoms and age would be enough to prescribe.

Also don't forget to ask about testosterone, it's not licensed in the UK but so many people say it's the icing on the HRT cake, it is a female hormone and we should be having it, for some bizarre reason it's not licensed in the UK for women.

I think something to do with the fact it's manufactured in a Tube created for 10ml does and women need a smaller dose.

Anyway that's all waffle! Hope it helps.
