Just read in a forum that someone has started to do this instead as they were intolerant & it has worked. Worth a try?

The issue is whether the mini pill provides sufficient progesterone to prevent the endometrium from proliferating under the influence of oestrogen. The risk of this is uterine cancer. Unless it has been proven and accepted by academic bodies to be safe I wouldn't recommend it.This is the great benefit of a mirena which stabilises the endometrium with only a very small amount of progesterone getting into the wider body.

Why would a GP suggest this if it didn't provide enough?

Well, it would depend on the GP's experience and whether they were happy to prescribe off licence. This is an area where things are changing very rapidly but I am not aware that using the 'mini pill' is as yet known to be safe in these circs. Clearly it has some impact on the uterine lining as lots of women's periods stop but without evidence in the UK we don't tend to prescribe.
