Hoping that the body of knowledge on here can set my mind at at rest.

I’m 46 and have been using Ovestrin 1mg cream to manage low level peri meno symptoms (grumbling bladder, slight vaginal dryness and itching) for about 2 months. I obtained this through the chemist online (did due diligence and a topical cream seemed pretty risk free, applied with applicator straight into vagina).

It has been FANTASTIC. All symptoms gone and my quality of life has really significantly improved - no side effects. Regained control of my own bladder! The initial dose was once a day for three weeks then twice weekly, which I’m now on.

I thought I’d better check in with my GP. Partly to check what I was doing was safe and ok to continue and partly so I could get the cream on prescription if needed (I’m in Scotland).

She seemed happy for me to continue with treatment and gave me a prescription. She asked specifically about my periods, so knew that they are still normal and I’ve had no real ‘classic’ symptoms yet, no hot flushes etc. and my general health is great.

When I picked my prescriptions up I was surprised to see that I had been given 0.75 mg Oestrogel, to be applied to the inner thighs or upper arms, prescribed dose twice a week. I’ve been reading about this and I’m really concerned that it’s not suitable for my particular stage. I’m prone to heavy periods and I’m a little scared that this will make me go haywire, particularly without accompanying progesterone. It seems a bit like using a sledgehammer to crack a nut. All the information online seems to suggest it’s more suitable for post menopausal women/ women without uteri. Maybe the twice a week dose is a low dose which makes makes it suitable for me but I am really nervous to start using it.
I would really appreciate anyone’s experience/insight.

Oh dear.

No it's not right.

But as there is a national shortage of gel you are luck to have it! Take it back to the pharmacy but also speak to your GP.

Isn’t it right? I’ve been on oestrogel since early peri - most of my peri friends have been prescribed the same

If I've read the post correctly, @Fractiontoomuchfennel has been using Ovestin - a vaginal estrogen cream inserted into the vagina. she bought it online and has now asked her GP for it on prescription.

However, she's been given Oestrogel which is a systemic form of HRT, not a topical vaginal cream. This is totally different. It's not what she wanted.
