Does the progestogen side of HRT ease heavy periods?

I’ve asked my gp this question but she’s pretty useless on the topic and right now I’d probably get better advice asking my dog.
I have very heavy periods, polyps have been found regularly over the last 10 years and a thicker than average uterine lining. I’ve had the polyps removed 4 times, the last time was 4 months ago, they grown bad fairly quickly. It hasn’t helped with the bleeding, in fact it’s worse than ever. Do know if that has coincided with me having me second Covid jab in December or my age (coming up for 49).
Anyhow, I am waiting for an ablation but have been warned that it could be months and months,
I’ve been offered the mirena as been told I need progesterone to shrink the polyps and lining but not too keen on having something planted inside of me tbh, I would rather have something I have more control of and can stop if I don’t get on with it or have nasty side effects.
I’m wondering that if the mirena contains a synthetic form of progesterone and helps reduce the lining of the uterus would body identical progesterone do the same thing?
Can you take body identical progesterone on its own? Could I then add in the oestrogen side when I feel ready? Ie when I have more menopause symptoms?

Hi OP bumping this for you and also giving my (limited!) experience too.

I’ve had heavy, long and painful periods forever but other than a pita no polyps or fibroids etc.

I had the Mirena coil fitted around ten years ago - so when I was 40 ish - simply to stop having these bloody awful periods. No periods, no PMT.

All went well… I had to have my second Mirena removed about 4 years ago because of surgery on my cervix - dodgy looking cells picked up from a routine smear. Anyway, there wasn’t a doctor trained to pop another Mirena in after this (fgs!)

Went to lovely GP after a while because bloody awful periods were returning, I just wanted an alternative (like you it seems) and she prescribed a Progesterone Only Pill - the brand name of mine was Cerazette. It gave the same effect - no periods, or slight spotting here or there.

I’m 50 now and peri menopausal and my new lovely doctor has fitted a new Mirena and I’ve been prescribed Oestrogel.

She did say that Mirena delivers more progesterone that the POP but tbh I’m a bit clueless. Although it works for me!

Sorry I have a tendency to waffle.
