Hysteroscopy advice

Snog · 10/01/2022 19:57

I'm due one of these for post menopausal bleeding.

Has anyone had one and can share their experience? It can be done as an outpatient with ibuprofen as pain relief or as a daycase with a spinal block or General anaesthesia. I'm very anxious about it and am pretty bad with pain.

@comfortablyfrumpy From memory, I had the hysteroscopy the day after my birthday (6th) and the results were given to me on 21st, so just over two weeks. My hysterectomy happened less than two weeks after that. I guess it is area dependent though. The hospital I am under fortunately didn't stop anything because of COVID.

Thank you @MrsMigginsCat (great username BTW).

I'm glad you got sorted so quickly.

I've just had consultant's letter through today, just the recap of what happened and his findings. It hasn't reassured me much TBH, so I just have to wait for the histology.

Hi comfortablyfrumpy.

I don't know if it helps at all but the consultant who did my hysteroscopy told me it was cancer there and then when I had the procedure.

The biopsy result was more about what stage/grade it was at. It turned out to be A1 which means very early stages. I don't have a tumour, I just have random patches of cells which are mutating very very slowly. Even with that the doctor was able to give me a diagnosis on the spot. Hopefully if they didn't do that with you it will be good news when you get your result.

I have since discovered that there is a pre-cancerous stage with the endometrium which is called atypical hyperplasia. I wonder if your docs might be looking for that?

Good luck with it all, and let us know the outcome x

Thank you @HollywoodTease.

The way the consultant was talking really did make me think he didn't like what he saw. He did say he hadn't expected to see it. So I am preparing myself.

It must have been a bit ofa shock, to say the least, for you to be told there and then.

@comfortablyfrumpy I'd really try not to worry- easier said than done I know!

Polyp-like structures is a very wide term. Even if you have multiple polyps, over 90% of polyps are benign.

As PP said, there are 4 types of hyperplasia ( thick lining) which can exist even before there is cancer. Hyperplasia ranges from simple, to complex, to typical-complex, to atypical complex. (Think that's right!) and it's only the last one which may become cancer.

And even if it was cancer, if it's localised, it's a hysterectomy and that's it- all over and sorted.

I hope you get good news soon.

Thank you @JinglingHellsBells

Just reporting back that I've just had a letter to say all OK. I am so relieved, I had to read it a few times to really convince myself.
So now will ask GP about HRT.
I'm still none the wiser about whether I've really gone through menopause or not - I guess it means I haven't? Bit of a bummer after having well over a year of no periods, and then having them come back with a vengeance!

@HollywoodTease I hope your op next week goes well. Will be thinking of you x

Hi, no I didn't :)

Nordicmom · 01/04/2022 19:10

I had one before ivf to check my uterus and i went in with just painkillers before .it it took about 20 min and I did remarkable well to begin with i though but then found it horrendous towards the end and swore never again . I’ve had to go through a lot with multiple miscarriages , investigations , ivf , emc etc . When I needed another plus samples to be taken I demanded sedation so it was done in a hospital theatre on our private insurance . Although more trouble in Covid times especially I preferred it hundred times over the bring wide awake . The actual procedure was a breeze since I was in fluffy clouds I felt something at one point they increased the sedation and after that I was out . I had oral morphine after ,minimal bleeding and not too bad pain then went home a few h after the procedure . I’ve had the mirena coil they put in at the same time checked ( and later removed at least for the time being ) and further samples taken twice after with just a painkiller since it was quick but samples were horrible , removal not pleasant but quicker . I’d recommend sedation . I’ve had it for colonoscopy and a dental procedure before and I love it . Not as risky as GA but knocks you out enough so you don’t suffer . Good luck

Nordicmom · 01/04/2022 19:15

Btw I had endometrial hyperplasia with no
Atypia so no precancerous cells but it was a risk nevertheless in the long term and the bleeding was horrible so it was treated for 12 m of mirena coil which worked . I took it out to check if it effected my blood sugar levels though which were then elevated after never being a problem . I am hoping I can put it back in though since it suited me well . The virtually no periods was great after 30+ y of them !

JinglingHellsBells · 01/04/2022 19:34

Just confused @comfortablyfrumpy as I could only see posts by snog and Hollywood, on their treatment etc, and not yourself. Must be going mad Grin sorry!

comfortablyfrumpy · 01/04/2022 21:16

@JinglingHellsBells every possibility I have posted on the wrong thread!

HollywoodTease · 01/04/2022 21:28

Pleased to hear that comfortablyfrumpy, it must be a great relief to you!

Hope your menopause/HRT goes Ok now and you find something that works for you.

OnGoldenPond · 02/04/2022 01:03

Just be aware that there is a possibility of serious complications with this procedure, including bowel perforation which could land you with a colostomy bag. I would recommend asking your surgeon about their complication rate as they can be wildly different for different surgeons according to their level of skill.

Walkingalot · 02/04/2022 01:52

Good luck on the 5th Hollywood. x

comfortablyfrumpy · 05/04/2022 10:41

Hope all goes well today @HollywoodTease.

HollywoodTease · 06/04/2022 16:42

Uterus now removed very efficiently (by robot!) by Liverpool Women's Hospital.

Hopefully all the cancer has gone with it!

I'm at home already and concentrating on my recovery.

Thanks for all your support and good wishes, it has helped!

comfortablyfrumpy · 06/04/2022 20:08

Glad to hear all has gone well! Rest up.
Wishing you a quick recovery x
