Progesterone every day?

RaisedByPangolins · 17/12/2021 13:40

I’ve been on HRT patches for a few months now. To start with it was the Evorel Sequi (50mcg oestrogen patches for 2 weeks and the combo oestrogen and progesterone ones for the other two weeks)

I recently doubled my dose because it didn’t seem to be working as well. But as the conti patches only come in 50s I had to have 100s and separate oral progesterone tablets.

I’ve been told to take the tablets every day. I did question it at the time to make sure I wasn’t confused about this but he confirmed. However it means I’ve had continuous bleeding for the last 5 weeks. It’s not a lot, just annoying as I get quite uncomfortable wearing pads, usually quite sore for a few days after my period, so this is now ongoing.

Is it usual to take it every day? Or should I go back and ask for a different regime?

Im on azalia progesterone only mini pill for heavy periods. I take it every day back to back. So, not HRT per se but prescribed to aleviate a symptom of menopause, im 51, no meno symptoms apart from heavy Ps
Feel fine, same, normal. Its not doing me any harm that i can see.

Utrogestan?

It's wrong what you have been told.

If you were on sequi before then that's what you still need.

So you use 100mgs patches?

The dose for Utrogestan is 200mgs ( 2 capsules) 12 days per month.

Hmm sounds like I may need to go back and ask for a second opinion on this then, thank you both.

The personalised label on my pack of utrogestan definitely says 1 every day.

So @AnFiaRuaNua does that mean you still get a regular monthly period - did it take a while to settle into a rhythm?

@RaisedByPangolins Sorry if you know this already but there are two types of HRT regimes. One is sequential- which you were on with your sequi patch- and the other is continuous.

Continuous is for women who are 12 months post menopause (that's no period for at least 12 months) or are aged over 54.

I'm confused by your first post - as the conti patches only come in 50s I had to have 100s and separate oral progesterone tablets

The only possible reason is they might think you need more progesterone to balance the higher estrogen you are on .

BUT the logical way would be to take additional progesterone for half the month only (the days when you have a combined patch), not daily.

It doesn't make any sense to combine daily utrogestan, which means you are actually using a continuous regime, and sequi patches for the rest of the month.

I take mine every day, at bedtime. I'm using Evorel 50 oestrogen-only patches in conjunction.

I've been on HRT for just over a week. The only thing I have noticed is a slight discharge. I think I might have to start using pantie liners again, after a gap of 12 years.

I haven't had any bleeding though. I thought that taking the progesterone daily is supposed to prevent that from happening? Maybe I'm wrong though. I guess I don't know enough about it yet.

Bagelsandbrie · 18/12/2021 09:05

I take utrogestan 100mg every day and the mini pill as the other part of my progesterone and I have oestrogel 3 pumps a day.

JinglingHellsBells · 18/12/2021 09:14

@80sMum @Bagelsandbrie I think there is some confusion going on :)

@80sMum the OP isn't using estrogen-only like you are. She's using Evorel sequi

There is a continuous HRT regime where progesterone is taken every day. That's fine! That's what you are both on :)

The difference with @RaisedByPangolins is a) she was already using a sequential regime (with a monthly bleed) and b) now her dr has changed her to something that is not one or the other but both!

She using sequi patches AND daily (continuous progesterone.)
It has to be one or the other.

Hi @raisedbypangolins yes if i miss even two pills, i get a show. I am "only" 51 and my mother had her last period at 56. I am not having that!! Done with periods now thanks to back to back pill.

Although the doc at the clinic did make it clear that later into menopause this may not continue to work for me, so who knows what lies ahead!?

80sMum · 18/12/2021 11:11

@JinglingHellsBells thanks for explaining.

RaisedByPangolins · 18/12/2021 13:53

@JinglingHellsBells the new patches are oestrogen only I think. The previous ones were sequi but these are a bigger patch as apparently the sequi only comes in 50s, so as I needed 100s he gave me these plus oral progesterone. I’m just confused because the sequi had a clear monthly cycle, whereas this is continuous and the cycle seems to be an endless period!

You need to ask your dr why he has changed it all.

Unless you are post menopause then you are likely to get a lot of breakthrough bleeding with conti regimes. even post-meno, bleeding is expected off and on for up to 6 months.

A 100mcg patch is a very high dose. And there is a chance that 100 mg Utrogestan won't work with that high dose anyway.

why don't you think about using estrogel and not a patch? you can adjust the dose far more easily rather than doubling it from a medium dose to a very high one.

Thank you. Will try and get through next week.
