Do you keep taking Utrogestan for 12 days if your period starts early (perimenopause)

Occasionally on around day 10 or 11 of taking Utrogestan my period starts. I am guessing this is because my body hasn't absorbed the Utrogestan properly. I'm wondering if I need to finish taking the Utrogestan for another couple of days or is it better to stop?

Yes, in a word :) Continue.

I’m in a similar position!

I just started Ultrogestan 100 which I am meant to take continuously, plus one pump of Lenzetto also continuously. I am 57 and still getting loads of spotting/light periods, pretty randomly/daily. I was on Femoston conti previously with the same problem.

Is it normal?

The medical info for all conti says it's normal for up to 6 months. This gives time for the progesterone part to thin the lining and keep it thin.

If you are over 6 months and still spotting, you need to talk to your dr.

@JinglingHellsBells thank you! I was hoping it will settle over time.

Thanks a lot @JinglingHellsBells

Is this still the case if taking vaginally?

Is this still the case if taking vaginally?
why would it not be?

Heavy flow! I'm new to this, luckily period came the day I stopped the progesterone.

Prescribed HRT last week. Utrogestan and sandrena gel. Confused by instructions (still waiting for a call from pharmacist to explain). It says, Take utrogestan daily on days 1 to 25 of cycle. Do I have to wait until my next period to start taking them or can I start now (I had my last period 12 days ago). Also, what do I do after day 25? How many days do I wait before starting again? Also, can I use the gel straight away before using the utrogestan?

@FifiChi Is there a leaflet in the box of Utrogestan? (There ought to be!)

All the directions are on it 'How to take'.
There are 2 ways. As listed on the leaflet

www.medicines.org.uk/emc/files/pil.352.pdf

Page 2, 3) How to take

If you are still having periods, you take it on a cycle, not daily (that is for post menopause women.)

2 capsules for 12 days each month.

If you are having normal periods, wait until the middle of your cycle to start it.

I don't understand why GPs don't explain this. Confused

JinglingHellsBells · 19/12/2021 07:54

You start Utrogestan on the same day each month.

So if you start on 1st Jan, the next 12 days of it will be 12th Feb, and so on. You can choose your starting day, ideally half way through your natural cycle.

You start gel straight away.

FifiChi · 19/12/2021 09:19

Thank you. That's all I needed to know. I read the leaflet but must have missed the bit about when to start during your cycle. I've been trying to find the answers by googling. Wish I'd thought of Mumsnet first!🤦‍♀️ What a great resource 😊

WarriorN · 19/12/2021 10:13

I found this leaflet helpful.

I was told to start on the 1st of every month to help remember date wise but at the time it would have been the complete opposite of my cycle. I found this an easier way to work it as I have to take other meds on a weekly basis anyway.

That bit isn't on the leaflet but what are GPs being paid for if they can't even tell women how to use a drug they prescribe?

Sorry- not having a go at you, but I've answered this query a million times here for people and all it needs is for a GP to do some basic research and get up to speed.

WarriorN · 19/12/2021 11:35

I found it similarly confusing when to actually start.

I started the patches around the time I was expecting a period as I was so achey but period immediately went awol, which threw me. All aches diminished though!

In the end I started the progesterone roughly mid cycle as if I'd started the next one. Period came when I finished that. Heavier than normal but I'd missed one also just had the booster which I do think affected it. (Had slight v slight nosebleed too which I never get.)

FifiChi · 03/01/2022 11:26

I have been taking Utrogestan for 14 days now and I have developed a red itchy rash under my breasts and slightly below which I thought might be due to sweating. Also on my armpits. Thought maybe this was due to a new deodarent (Mitchum. Had to try a stronger deo because of increased BO). Anyone one else had an itchy rash on HRT or is this simply me being extra sweaty?

bigTillyMint · 04/01/2022 16:04

@FifiChi, I think I’ve heard of other menopausal women having problems with Mitchum, so maybe try a different one?

Nifta · 08/12/2024 17:09

Hi I have been using utrogestan for a few months I was told to take it 15 days after my cycle starts for 12 days. So far I have started my next cycle a couple of days after the course ended. Today however I have 2 days to go and have started my cycle again. My question is do I count 15 days from now as normal?

Wigglypasta · 10/12/2024 07:28

Your HRT should over ride your natural cycle in the end so just take the utrogestan 12 days on 16 days off or same day each month if you do it that way and ignore your natural cycle.
