What can I expect at gynae appt?

Background - I was on either the mini pill or implant for 13 years after last baby was born so didn't have any periods, or just a couple in the gaps. I had my last implant removed in Oct 2020 and expected periods to return. I was 46. Roll on 14 months and still no period so assumed that was the menopause done and dusted.

Last week I started bleeding heavily. Full on mega period, cramps, awful tummy ache, backache, nausea, flooding through maxi tampons and pads every three hours, pain keeping me awake. Boy has it been a shock to the system.

I had a phone appt with my GP yesterday who has ordered bloods (C125 plus eight others) and referred me to gynae under the urgent two week pathway. He told me not to go away because it's really important I go to this appt. He also said that the way I describe the blood loss he thinks it sounds benign so I'm clinging on to that.

Can anyone tell me what to expect at the gynae appt? Will they do stuff there and then like scan, or will they just refer me on to other lists?

unfortunately it probably will be just a phone appointment and onward referral

It all depends on where you are going to see the dr.

It is more likely that you will have to return for a scan as it's not usual in the NHS to do it on the same day unless your GP has booked it for you.

They are likely to take a medical history and decide what's needed next. They may do an internal exam on the day to check for growth or fibroids etc.

I had the blood test on Monday afternoon. GP just phoned to say the C125 was on the top limit of normal (it's supposed to be below 35 and mine was 35 exactly) so he's done a referral for an urgent ultrasound. Still waiting for the gynae appt.
The bleeding has stopped but I'm still very sore. I'm trying not to think about it but it's hard to ignore.

Unless I am wrong the C125 is an ovarian cancer test and is nothing to do with heavy bleeding. Even in women with advanced OC it's not an accurate test anyway. And OC doesn't cause heavy bleeding.

The way forward is the s can and TBH- not meaning to minimise your worries- at your age this can be quite normal. You are only 48, so it's likely you are in peri and having a heavy period. Look at it this way- if you have not had a period for ages, the lining can build up and when it does come away that's when you get flooding.

My gynae appt is at the hospital on the 22nd. The letter said I need an ultrasound before hand which the GP has ordered anyway so that's good.

I don't really know what to make of it all and I'm trying to keep busy and not worry too much. I've got some other symptoms too (frequent and urgent urination, bloating, feeling full quickly, weight loss, acid reflux, tiredness) which I always put down to other things, like being v overweight and T2 diabetes.
