Sore breasts?

I should probably start by mentioning that I had a hysterectomy 5 years ago (fibroids) so have no idea whether I would be having periods still or not.

Last summer I was suffering really badly with hot flushes and sleeplessness, referred to GP who took blood and said my oestrogen levels didn't indicate menopause. Hot flushes have passed, to be replaced by really achy and sore breasts. Both sore, although one sorer than other. Have had a good feel round and just tender and achy, no lumps or marks I can spot. Do I just need to ride through this with painkillers or is it back to GP - as soon as I mention sore breasts and they see my age (49) will alarm bells start ringing with them?

I think you should contact your GP.Probably all absolutely fine, but worth getting checked out.

If they're sore enough to warrant painkillers it might be worth mentioning it to your GP.

However pain is rarely a symptom of breast cancer and when it is it's more likely to be when the pain is just in one spot - which doesn't seem to be the case with you.

You might also want to find out when your mammogram is due. I had sore breasts recently and was wondering whether I should check with the GP. At that point the screening appointment popped through the letterbox! I've since had a clear result and the soreness seems to have gone away (touch wood)!

I have always had sore breasts for half of my menstrual cycle. For me it's very much hormonal. I wouldn't worry if there's no lump or other symptoms but worth mentioning to your GP anyway if you're worried.

I'm less sore today and have also woken up with a cracking headache the last two days which was a classic symptom of PMT when I was having periods. I've also switched bras to one which is not underwired which might make a difference.

Breast screening in Scotland is offered to all women aged 50 to 70, so I will be called for my first in around 6 months. (Happy Birthday! Come to have your breasts squished!)

I always had sore breasts peri menopause and post menopause. I found Evening Primrose oil helped a lot.

If you have some concerns @MLMshouldbeillegal see your GP.
It is likely to be nothing, but if it's not, 6 months is too long to wait.

Yes, if you have any symptoms, alarm bells ought to ring- and that's a good thing.

Hi OP, I'm in Scotland too. If you're 50 in 6 months then it could be age 53 by the time you are called - so sometime between being 50 and 53. I'd not wait if I had any sort of breast change - in fact they say not to wait for your screening apt if there is a change. Some types of breast cancer don't show as a lump at first so any change or concern I'd report to your GP. I had to go to the breast clinic recently with a faint indentation which turned out to be a cyst that the Dr couldn't feel. It was benign but if not they might have caught something early. Just get checked.

@HalfHolly The screening on the NHS is the same in England. 'From age 50' doesn't mean AT 50, it can be 51 or 52...just depends.

HalfHolly · 07/12/2021 10:00

That's what I said - could be any time from 50 to 53 for your first call.

HalfHolly · 07/12/2021 10:01

Yes I knew it was the same in England. I'm from Ireland where it's every two years.
