Vagifem and oral sex

Has anyone come across any information on whether it’s safe for your partner to have oral sex with you if you’re using Vagifem? I asked the nurse who renewed my prescription - she sounded very uncertain and then said it’s best to avoid it.

Any opinions?

You normally only use it twice a week so I'd maybe avoid Going Down on the same days the vagifem is Going Up

BruceAndNosh, that's a catchy reminder!

Apart from the estradiol, there are half a dozen other ingredients in each pessary - will probably have to research each one before DH is allowed down there!

What exactly do you think might happen to your partner? Vagifem is a pessary and stays high up in the vagina.

Er, surely that theory would mean any sex was risky? The dose of hormone is low but if you are concerned, leave a decent interval between using the Vagifem and fun time. Grin

According to the Vagifem site, the pessary dissolves over several hours. I was concerned about him ingesting something that could harm him.

No, not any sex, just oral sex (given the possibility of ingestion).

Given my current state, I'm not going to be ready for anything else for quite a while!

I’d email the company that made it and ask?

I wouldn’t want him getting affected by it. He may grow boobs on his tongue Grin

Even if the teeny tiny tablet was to work its way down through the umbrella-like folds of the vagina and somehow get into his mouth and he was somehow to swallow it, the dose is so small as to be harmless to him. But by all means check with the manufacturer.
P.S. I use it every day.

I didn't think he would be swallowing the tablet - since it's supposed to dissolve I thought there could be traces of it that could be harmful if ingested.

Checking with the manufacturer is a good idea - should have thought of that myself!

If it was an issue, it would be listed on the patient leaflet @Ceri80
You won't be the only woman with these concerns.

Think about all the chemicals in all the food we eat (processed food) and all the tablets we swallow - anti Bs, pain killers, etc etc.
We are probably eating more stuff than is in a Vagifem capsule.
The ingredients will be innocuous substances used to bind the active ingredient into a pessary.

If you are really worried just avoid being intimate on those days.

I really don't think it's anything to worry about.

JinglingHellsBells · 03/12/2021 22:19

@Ceri80 These are the ingredients listed online on the patient info.

Other ingredients are: hypromellose, lactose monohydrate, maize starch and magnesium stearate.

They are all basic 'food stuffs' found in lots of manufactured food and tablets/ vitamin pills etc

Lactose, maize starch, magnesium stearate. Hypromellose is a thickener and an alternative to animal gelatine.

All safe.

Thanks for the reassurance JinglingHellsBells.
