Will the mini pill help my symptoms, I’m anxious and exhausted each month.

I’m definitely peri-menopausal. I’ve had blood tests and ultrasound. They found a fibroid and put it down to that but also said my ovaries were small and levels on blood test borderline.

I’m 38, my mums periods just stopped aged 37.

I have M.E and it’s getting to the point around my periods that I’m floored and really down. I’ve weeks of back ache then it finally comes and I can hardly move, bad headaches etc. My hair has gone curly.

I can’t have the combined pill as I’ve had a few migraines. I’ve tried the mini pill in the past but in a time of great stress so I couldn’t give it the time needed to settle down.
They won’t discuss HRT, will this mini pill help. I don’t mind trying again if it makes me feel a bit better.

My experience of the mini pill was very good.
I started it about age 35, as I was a smoker.
It didn't take long to settle and I think I had break at the end of a pack.

Then I started to take it continuously at about 40, as felt more even on it.
I stopped taking it about age 45, I wasn't having sex and thought it would be a good idea to let my body be natural.
See what would happen. Then after about 6 months of hormonal misery, I asked the gp would it be ok to go back on it continuously.
I'm 52.

I've deffo become peri in the last 6 yrs.

I think I've had one lot of breakthrough bleeding in the last 4 years. I thought my luck on it had come to an end, but my body righted itself after about 10 days.

It's definitely worth a shot op. You do have to stick with it.

Xx

Around my periods and the two weeks afterwards I've been getting increasingly floored. I have energy issues, possibly mild cfs though have conditions that cause exhaustion anyway but the cyclical nature was becoming disabling.

I only had a couple of hot flushes and but a lot of over heating at night and aches and pains.

I'd personally argue with Gp that if your mum's periods stopped that early on that this is likely to be peri menopause.

1.You've a couple of options; try the pill and see if it helps, it could be good.

2.Push for a different opinion and/ or referral to a meno specialist.

3.Do both.

  1. And / also / or go private. There's a bit of a waiting list for Dr Louise Newson.

The thing is, hrt isn't particularly different to the combined oral pill it's just doesn't offer contraception.

It's also safer than cop if used for periods as body identical. Mini pill isn't combined oral pill though but I remember asking if this would help the ups and downs issue of my cycle and the Gp at the time said no.

WarriorN · 04/12/2021 10:42

Back ache has been a substantial issue for me too.

WarriorN · 04/12/2021 10:45

Ooos numbers went wrong!

I've been on hrt for almost 2 weeks.

The physical crashes are definitely lessened, I started oestrogen patch around my period. Period didn't come and I had more energy.

I feel like I'll need more oestrogen at my review, it's a low dose. The progesterone part is definitely helping sleep and feeling chilled, even when taking vaginally.

I've been great on it, no issues, defo worth a try

@Imscared83 If your mum had a premature menopause the odds are you are going to as well.

You need HRT with estrogen. The mini pill doesn't give that.

Early menopause is a medical condition that needs treatment with estrogen. Without it, you are at risk of osteoporosis in your 50s or sooner and also heart disease and maybe dementia.

Your comment about the Pill and migraines.

HRT is not the pill - they are different.
Women with migraine use HRT. it's not contraindicated.

You need to ask your GP to refer you if necessary to a gynae with menopause expertise, to get your medication established.

The thing is, hrt isn't particularly different to the combined oral pill it's just doesn't offer contraception. @WarriorN HRT is very different to the Pill. 99% of HRT now is body-identical, so the hormones are replacing our own and are natural. The Pill is a synthetic drug and contains a much higher level of hormones than HRT.

WarriorN · 04/12/2021 13:32

Jingling, What meant was that why not be given hrt rather than COP? I know she's being offered mini pill.) Especially if it's physical cyclic symptoms you're trying to balance.

This was how it was explained to me when I was researching if I can take hrt when Breastfeeding (an older child.) slight different context but I was considering a contraceptive to help deal with the ups and downs of the cycle physically. As hrt is body identical, it's fine and more helpful for that specific reason, without the contraceptive aspect.

Mini pill may help but not if oestrogen is the missing part? It's been the missing part for me, exhaustion wise.

WarriorN · 04/12/2021 13:34

I'm saying the same as you Jingling but I suppose how to pitch to Gp!

It's how two hcps explained to me.

I'm still bf my pre schooler very occasionally morning and night.

I’m going to go back and push as I’m not happy at all. Thing is I am still getting periods regularly around 21-25 days but the aching is getting worse each month and all the other symptoms also.

They did a scan and said my ovaries are small and found a 2cm fibroid and blaming all my symptoms on that. I don’t think it is that at all.

WarriorN · 04/12/2021 15:27

I don't know about fibroids but those were my symptoms. Slightly longer cycles though.
