Could my 'depressive' feelings be down to Utrogestan?

I'm post meno, but back on HRT because my sleep was so bad. I have an Evorel patch and take Utrogestan.

It's been brilliant for my sleep, but I'm wondering whether it might be flatlining me a bit? I'm not necessarily a glass half full person, but I do feel really quite low. Like I'm dragging myself around. And I feel tired during the day still, despite getting the best sleep in years these past few weeks.

Any thoughts?

Yes

it's well known that any type of progestogen can do this.

And utrogestan is also a sedative.

You might want to swap to another sort, or revert to using it for 12 days per month and not daily.

I think when you're post meno, you use it sequentially.

But I've already decided to try using it vaginally, see if that helps. If feelings persist, I'll come off.

Sequentially is on a cycle-12 days per month (or less as prescribed by a specialist if intolerant.)

Continuously is what you are doing now- every day, 2 hormones.

Post meno women can use it sequentially if they prefer that way. It's not black and white.

But I'm using it for sleep, so sequentially is the only way it makes it worthwhile....

You're mixed up :)

Sequentially is 12 days per month.

What you are doing is called continuous combined

every day, both hormones.

You need to balance the sedative side which you like against the depressive /flat side.

It's estrogen that helps sleep so maybe that needs increasing.

Thisisunpleasant · 10/11/2021 17:54

Ah, yes, continuous!

My understanding is that it's not the estrogen, any more than progesterone, that helps sleep.

That's according to my specialist

Utrogestan is known to cause sedation. But that doesn't mean all types of progestins cause sedation. Micronised progesterone is one of 4 types that can be used for HRT.

I slept like a baby on estrogen only but when I added in Norethisterone I didn't sleep so well.

I do sleep better on Utrogestan is I take it orally, but my dr prefers vaginal use as it's more effective.
