Can I take utrogestan vaginally?

They're oral capsules but I think I'd prefer to try and limit side effects and not swallow them.

I'm sure I read they can be taken vaginally.. do you just take the prescribed dose in that way?

Be grateful for any advice

When I was prescribed utrogestan, I was given specific vaginal capsules, they dissolved very quickly leaving the most horrible, sticky, weird smelling paste that I hated. I wouldn't insert an oral capsule, it's not what it's designed for and may have ingredients that will irritate your vagina. I also took oral tablets at the same time and had no noticeable side effects.

@MrsRubyMonday thanks for that. I may try it orally first. You can take the capsules either way though - won't irritate anything - but I just wonder where the lesser side effects are so good to know you didn't have any

I took them orally for ages then realised I was feeling groggy and tired so tried them vaginally which lifted this feeling.
I missed the deeper sleep though so returned to taking them orally.GP said it was ok to do this.

@NotLikeThatGerald The capsules you have are also fine to use vaginally. I use them that way from a consultant. I have , previously, had the 200mgs vaginal capsules and they are exactly the same, just bigger.

@MrsRubyMonday The capsules whether they are 100mg or 200mg are exactly the same. The only difference is the cost. The 200mg are much more expensive, more than twice the cost.

Thanks for the replies

I've been prescribed 100mg to take for 25 days consecutively each month. Does this sound about right?

I was told by the Newson health clinic that you can take the oral capsules vaginally, they’re just not licensed for use in that way in the uk but in other European countries they are. I was supposed to take the capsules orally every day (100mg continuously, I was also taking the mini pill and oestrogel) and they said if I wanted to take it vaginally it would be every other day. So best check with someone re dose etc.

I've been prescribed 100mg capsules to take daily with no breaks. The doctor said I can take them vaginally and suggested I do because when I was on oral Femoston I had low moods during the progesterone phase.

They can be a bit smelly and leaky - I put one in before bed but still prefer to use a panty liner to soak up any leaks. Due to the smell I'd rather not insert one in the morning and then be walking around all day ponging. (Although I have a very keen sense of smell and I'm sure nobody else would detect it!)

Can I possibly ask a question linked to Utrogestan?

I'm taking it vaginally, no breaks during the month, as orally gave me hideous abdominal cramps. I take it at night time as advised, however this means I no longer take the Vagifem I was prescribed before starting HRT. I'm not sure if you can take both together, at night? And I forgot to ask during the appointment a couple of months ago.

So can anyone advise? Can you take 0.5 Sandrena, plus 100mg Utrogestan vaginally, plus a Vagifem pessary daily? If yes, can you take the Utrogestan and Vagifem together at night?

Or do I have to stop taking Vagifem as I'm getting Oestrogen via the Sandrena? The fact that the Sandrena is currently doing absolutely nothing for the delightfully named Vaginal Atrophy, is leaving me feeling quite sad. I'd prefer the Vagifem back! I would honestly ditch the Sandrena and Utrogestan HRT if it was a choice between these two or Vagifem. Maybe I need an increase in Sandrena however to compensate for no Vagifem?

This is all so confusing! (Sorry). I am trying to get a GP telephone appointment, but I'll probably need to wait a few weeks, so if anyone has an answer in the meantime I'd be so appreciative! x

I think the only solution is to divide the two- so, use Vagifem some hours apart from when you insert utrogestan.

You don't need to use either at night- utrogestan vaginally can be done any time so my consultant told me (just be aware it doesn't slip out to soon ) and Vgaifem can be used any time.

Thanks very much for this - I'll aim to take the progesterone at night and Vagifem in the morning. Its hilarious how much you have to remember to do, just when your memory is at its menopausal worst!
Many thanks x
