Low FSH

Hi, recently I’ve been convinced that I’m perimenopausal, symptoms include; sudden onset anxiety, insomnia, heavy periods, shorter cycle and low libido.

Had my bloods done and my GP says I’m nowhere near menopause as my FHS is 2. What does this mean? Is 2 very low??

Did he do any other blood tests? Could be thyroid related.

I’ve just started HRT and had bloods done. They said my FSH was high which was a symptom of being “pre menopausal” but tbh even without that, my age and symptoms all fit and I’m already treating my thyroid.

As I understand it, if you’re over 40, once your periods go a bit haywire they don’t need a blood test to assume you’re perimenopausal. They can just start treating you as if you are.

Thanks. Yes they ran thyroid tests and said it’s fine. I have a strong family history of thyroid problems so did think it might be that.. I’m nearly 42 btw.

I’m at a loss now to be honest. I’ve been prescribed Fluoxetine for anxiety but I’m nervous about starting it.

How old are you and was there just one blood test? Results can vary due to fluctuating hormones so the test should be repeated. Or, you should be offered HRT based just on symptoms, depending on your age. It's worth reading the NICE guidelines and maybe seeing a different GP if you think HRT might help. Do check out thyroid etc though, of course.

Sorry, just saw your age! I'm similar and going to a private meno specialist as I can't get blood tests at present but GP says O need tests as I'm under 45. It's typical but not necessarily helpful for women to be offered antidepressants for perimenopausal symptoms. Been there, done that...

No, it's over 45, not 40.

@Wineloffa Low FSH means you are fertile. High FSH ( over 30) is a sign of menopause.

But a single blood test is inaccurate.

You need 2 tests, a month apart, taken on days 2-5 of your cycle.
