Mirena - no strings

I had a Mirena fitted almost 3 months ago. Had a scan due to continual spotting/bleeding and no strings visible. Coil is in the right place, but I’m most probably going to ask for it out due to the bleeding. I’m just waiting for this period to be over, and to get to 3 months, before I decide what to do.
But my question is how do they get it out ? Is it going to be a general anaesthetic?

Hi there
You should be able to feel the string from the Merina if it is there. I’ve had mine in for years but obviously changed every 3 years. It’s a simple procedure for the removal and it only takes seconds, no anaesthetic is required.

Mirena can take up to 6 months to settle so three months is a bit too soon to give up . If you decide you really want it removed then with no visible threads you'll need a referral to the complex contraception clinic where they will use local anaesthetic and a special flexible tool to locate and bring the threads down. It's quite painless and takes a few minutes.
The only downside is that there may be a long waiting list so you'll be stuck with the mirena for a while yet.

The strings are not there, I can’t feel them and the GP can’t see them, but Ive had a scan and it’s in the right place.
I’ve finally had 3 days of no spotting, so I’m hoping that’s the end of that and it’s settling.
Thanks for that info about getting it out, I really don’t want a GA when the time comes.

This didn't work for mine and I got mine out under general anaesthetic when it expired

Yep, my strings disappeared and I had to have it out under GA. They did try other methods first though.
