Abrupt menopause and prolapse

ProLapps · 13/10/2021 07:49

I’m 49 and haven’t had a period since early August.

I skipped a period in April but other than that they’ve been happening frequently.

I had a prolapse a few years ago which resolved after physio. It’s come back in the last few weeks, worse than ever and I’m feeling really depressed about it.

So my questions are: is that it? Is that the menopause? For some reason I thought I’d had lighter periods for a few years, not just an abrupt stop. And has anyone else experienced sudden worsening of prolapse? I’m feeling really down about the options — I’m doing exercises but seeing no improvement, and neither a pessary nor surgery seem like great options.

Which exercises are you doing

I've found vagifem has helped a lot with the discomfort. It's a topical HRTand it comes in pessary form which you insert every day for 2 weeks and then use for maintenance twice a week. Also I saw my gynae physio yesterday who said I have an over active pelvic floor, so if this is the same for you and you are doing pelvic floor strengthening exercises, then possibly you could be making your symptoms worse. The physio said these things can flare up at menopause because your hormones are dropping. Possibly HRT would help, which you can use alongside vagifem.
I would go back to the physio as a first step

Also just a thought but when did you have your 2nd Covid Vax, because I missed a couple of periods after mine and apparently it's quite common.

HabIt videos and using PelviTone machine (it’s like the Kegel8).

Had the 2nd jab back in May so I don’t think it’s that.

I’ve contacted my GP and asked for a referral back to physio but no idea how long that will take.

I don’t think my pelvic floor is overactive… you can’t win!

Might be worth doing a one off private appointment if you can. They can then refer you back to the NHS I think. Ask the Dr for some vagifem in the meantime because it might alleviate some of the discomfort

Also physio talked about adjusting posture so tailbone is tucked in to alleviate pressure on pelvic floor and stop it dragging everything downwards.

Thanks Aderyn21.
