Random bleeding after menopause

noideawhatusernametochoose · 12/10/2021 09:55

After over a year of no periods, I had bleeding in July. Dr put me straight onto 2 Week Wait for scan and tests. Had scan, slight thickening of lining, (blood test clear, so they're not worried about that) Found a cyst on ovary, which they are going to scan regularly.

3 months on I'm bleeding again, and have got period type cramps. I'm so bloody fed up, I really thought I was through this and out the other side.

Has anyone else experienced similar? How long did it drag on for you, for you?

Placemarking because I was coming on to post almost the same thing.

4ish years post menopause. On HRT and an implant/coil. Haven’t had any periods for 4-5 years but started one earlier this week.

Based on what you’ve said above, should I be contacting my Dr?

(Sorry, that’s not very helpful to you really)

igivein · 12/10/2021 10:18

I had this. About 18months of no periods then started bleeding. Got checked on the two week pathway - all fine.
Registrar told me it’s not uncommon for this to happen - like your uterus cranking up for a ‘last hurrah’. She also said that a subsequent bleed up to three months later wasn’t a problem, but any longer than that and I should go back for checks.
I did bleed again three months later, then nothing since (over five years now)

I think general advice is yes contact your doctor. Any bleeding post menopause should be investigated. Most of the time it's nothing, but best to be sure of that. I was seen very quickly. Hope yours turns out to be OK.

Thanks @igivein that's really helpful. Sounds like it's one of those things then. I've actually got period pains for the first time in so long (I had had a Mirena for years). It's sooo annoying, I thought at least I was free of these!

I'm waiting for a repeat scan on the dodgy ovary, and then will have an appt with the gynaecologist so I'll mention it to her but hopefully it's a "last hurrah" (though one I could have done without).

I had similar including an all-clear from the 2-week pathway. Mine seemed to be linked to my second Covid vaccination, went on for a few months but stopped now.

Interesting. I had my second jab near the end of May, and the first instance of bleeding second week July. Then nothing until this week. Wonder if it is linked?

Same thing has happened to me today! Over 3 years since last period, today light bleeding and cramps! Weird, will contact GP to check.

It's a bit weird isn't it when it turns up out of the blue! Hope yours also turns out to be nothing worrysome.

I feel a bit miffed to be having period pains again, I thought at least I was past that!

Yes, having really bad cramps and bleeding has started to get heavier. I haven't even got any sanitary products any more, have had to ask DD!! GP rang back and referred me to the 2 week wait. Fingers crossed it's a very late 'last hurrah' of the ovaries!

I also had to borrow from daughters Grin

Hope it turns out to be nothing. I didn't realise that "last hurrahs" from ovaries were a thing until it happened to me. Argh, it's horrible, isn't it.

Yes. It’s probably nothing but it needs checking. Smile

I was also going to ask about when you had your covid jab since it can definitely cause abnormal bleeding. I'm not menopausal but started bleeding heavily the day after my second jab and things have been crazy since then.

Here Is an article with a brief bit of information.

SpindleWharl · 13/10/2021 10:18

I had this. After being faffed about for years, turns out it was a fibroid tucked snugly into the uterine lining. I eventually had a hysterectomy. It's good not to be constantly bleeding any more.

I also had my ovaries removed at the same time. But I was late 50s, perimenopausal, and already on consultant-approved HRT.

A few years later, the only downside is my current GP being very obstructive about my being on HRT. Their training on this is woeful. But I'm standing firm. I didn't go through all that ^^ to be dumped onto an unnecessary anti-depressant and a nice cup of tea.

SparklingLime · 13/10/2021 11:09

Thanks, @Gingerkittykat. I also started bleeding the day after my second vaccination. Having been past menopause for years. It went on off and on for a few months, along with breast pain. This really needs more attention, to reassure women at least.

The weird thing for me is that my bleeding started some time after 2nd jab - I've no idea if there woudl be a correlation? ... and then another period 3 months later. All this after having had well over a year clear and thinking I was done with menopause.

I've never taken HRT, though I did have a Mirena Coil in from 2014 (for ridiculously heavy bleeding) - had it removed at my hospital appointment.

I'll see what gynae says at my next appt. I'm to have another scan first, currently waiting on a date for that.

Thanks for the link, SparklingLime.

I did quote the NICE guidelines to my GP but she said she'd never heard of them, as if that invalidated them or something! I stood my ground though and she did renew my prescription but she's only doing it on a 4-weekly basis and its such a bloody faff.

She also put a lot of stress onto me when I least needed it.

SummerWillow · 21/10/2021 07:34

Just as a follow up, my scan showed nothing abnormal - just a small ovarian cyst as a result of ovulation - after 3.5 years of nothing! So a final fling of the ovary does happen! Apparently it's not particularly unusual.

borntobequiet · 21/10/2021 07:49

I’m well into my sixties and have had on off bleeding, sometimes very prolonged and heavy, for ever, including over the last few days. Had investigations and “nothing wrong” so wasn’t given the hysterectomy I asked for. Instead at 63 I had a Mirena fitted, which greatly reduced the bleeding to maybe four or five times a year and very light, like the tail end of a period. Three months ago I had the Mirena replaced. I use two pumps of Oestrogel daily. I’m physically fit and healthy and regularly mistakenly thought to be ten years or more younger than I am. I attend a leading NHS menopause clinic in London.
I think I still occasionally ovulate, though scans show nothing to indicate that. I think that menopause isn’t as clear cut as people think, that in the same way some women have prematurely early menopause, others (rarely) can be very late.
You should get your bleeding investigated. I’m tripled jabbed but vaccination had no noticeable effect on mine.

Good news that it was nothing sinister.

Honestly, the things our bodies do to us Grin

Wandamakesporridge · 06/11/2021 14:04

Oh bugger. So now I have another thing to worry about. I’m 49 and haven’t had a period for about 2 years but suddenly got one yesterday.
Sorry if TMI but it’s dark and brown - not how my periods used to be.

I will contact my GP - however DH is currently isolating due to testing positive for Covid, so I will have to wait until he’s out of isolation (fingers crossed the rest of us don’t get it) Sad

I think considering my age could just be a last fling of the ovaries….

Wandamakesporridge · 06/11/2021 14:06

(Oh and my last Covid vaccination was in May so not likely to be the cause).
