I've been taking it for, not sure how long but atleast 5 years. Symptoms weren't horrific at the start. Mainly lack of sleep and some hot flushes. I'm on a low level and have been cutting back for also what seems like a long time- maybe 9 months-ish. My GP doesn't seem to give me much advice. So how did you stop taking it please?

How long til you completely stopped? Did any symptoms return? I'm struggling to know what to do. Thanks

I was on HRT for 10 years after a hysterectomy and then my GP told me I couldn’t have it any more because it was considered to raise the risk of breast cancer. I went into full menopause with hot flushes and night sweats that lasted at least three years. Why do you want to cut back and give it up?

Liz1tummypain · 07/10/2021 12:58

@mdh2020, thanks for that. I'm not very good at taking any sort of pills. I have another heart thing so I'm on statins and aspirin each day for that. Also I don't like the thought of all the hormones that are excreted going into the water supply. Various reasons.

The final straw, if you like, was when I was talking to an ex-colleague recently, she's now in her mid-sixties and she said that for her personally, she doesn't expect hot flushes to ever go away. So I'm thinking perhaps I should just woman-up and live with them. If hot flushes come back so long as they aren't too fierce, I could probably cope, ( I know fierce ones because I took pills that brought on a full menopause before the hysterectomy) . It's the insomnia and weird mood swings that I really don't fancy getting back again. I'm just in two minds about how soon I should cut back or completely cut it out now.

You usually get gels or patches rather than pills for
HRT these days.

oneglassandpuzzled · 07/10/2021 13:02

So perhaps you could try these instead?

Will never give HRT up. It protects your bones and lessens the threat of osteoporosis. Have a bone density scan before making a decision to stop HRT and don't rely on your GP. See a menopause specialist. Good luck

If you have issues with clotting you should not be using tablet form HRT. You should be using patches or gel.

Also, if you have high cholesterol (not sure what you mean by heart issues?) then estrogen is protective, it improves the ratio of HDL (cholesterol) and helps prevent plaque in the arteries.

Sorry new to all this, does that mean you are on hrt forever ? If you are, does it keep you having periods?

JinglingHellsBells · 07/10/2021 13:18

@Badfootkk Maybe start a new thread or do some reading- try My Menopause Dr- great info under Resources- videos, fact sheets , etc

Badfootkk · 07/10/2021 14:14

Will do thank you- I haven't really considered it before , as i am vegan- but a few friends are going through it and talking about it. I am off to educate myself :0)

well, you will be happy to know @Badfootkk that the types women use mostly now is all made from yams:)
Badfootkk · 07/10/2021 15:22

No wait... what?! You have changed my world , I thought it was horses hormone , so I have tried to stick my head in the sand and about it all. Yams you say , I'm off for another Google. I did look a couple of years ago but there was no mention of this. Do you have a specific brand name that I could ask for ?

Badfootkk · 07/10/2021 15:25

Sorry @Liz1tummypain for jumping in your thread. Hope you get some helpful answers .

JinglingHellsBells · 07/10/2021 15:37

@Badfootkk The only HRT made from horse urine is that starting with 'Prem ( Premarin, Prempak) and it's the old sort not often prescribed.

The new types like gels and patches are made from yam, as is micronised progesterone (Utrogestan.)

oneglassandpuzzled · 07/10/2021 20:46

My oestrogen gel is called oestrogel. Only yams are hurt in its manufacture. 🙂

Liz1tummypain · 07/10/2021 21:08

@JinglingHellsBells, ok thanks for your comments. Maybe my GPs are a bit behind the times. They've been happy to keep supplying HRT pills and they must know I'm on statins. Nobody has said I shouldn't take HRT as a pill til now.

The heart thing was a spontaneous coronary arterial dissection. But they don't really know why. I didn't ft the typical profile so they just put me on aspirin and statins for ever. Thanks again.

@ Badfootkk, cheers yes I think I'm starting to see the way forward. Also I was on premarin to begin with- when it was made from horses pee and it was great stuff. Did the job perfectly. I just never got that squeamish about it somehow.

OP join Facebook group 'the HRT Truth Collective". Lots of experts and women using HRT on there. Great for asking questions.
