About to move from combi pill to mini pill due to age (44) but told it will stop periods, will I still get peri signs ? No estrogen is concerning me a bit.

It made me bleed for the whole 4.5 months I was taking it! I was anaemic in the end.

I had to swap pills for the same reason (age) and I've had no issues. I don't get a period at all but have had peri symptoms - night sweats, aches, not sleeping etc. Had a blood test last month which confirmed I am peri menopausal. I've to get another blood test next week then discuss with doctor what to do next.

gogohm · 24/09/2021 07:13

I switched to mirena, get very few symptoms now and very light bleeding

dementedpixie · 24/09/2021 07:16

If you don't smoke, don't have a high bmi and have normal blood pressure then you can stay on the combined pill until age 50

dementedpixie · 24/09/2021 07:18

And the mini pill can cause random bleeding, heavy bleeding or may stop your periods. There's no guarantee that they will stop and you won't know the effects until you try it

SedentaryCat · 24/09/2021 07:26

I was put on the mini pill to help with heavy periods (due to peri). It has stopped them completely, and for a while stopped the hot flushes/night sweats.

It's been about 3 years and the hot flushes are returning...oh joy.

liveforsummer · 24/09/2021 07:31

I've been on the mini pill for 4 years and never bled unless missing more than 2 pills over a short space of times (until I had my covid jab that is) in fact that's why I take it as no longer need it as birth control- be aware that it may cause night sweats at first. I had about 3 months of them that gradually went away rather than suddenly so don't necessarily confuse that with peri symptoms.

Im waiting to start the Mini Pill I bought Hana and the leaflet says ....+ i was told to take it on the first day of my period. Trouble is its a period that wont come. I havent had sex so im not pregnant. Im 48 and last period started on 27th August.
Im child free by choice and fucking angry that i still have to worry about this despite asking to be sterilised throughout my 20s and 30s.

dementedpixie · 01/10/2021 06:56

You can start the mini pill at any time if you are sure you arent pregnant. It takes 2 days of pill taking to get contraceptive cover.

I love the mini pill. I’ve been on it for 6 years - I’m 40 and never have any periods. Ever. I did have breakthrough bleeding for the first 3 months but kept on with it and it stopped and now I don’t have any bleeding at all. If you have menopausal symptoms you can always take HRT alongside it - I do, I’m in early menopause due to autoimmune issues. I take the mini pill everyday, 3 pumps of oestrogel and utrogestan 100mg every night.

MercyBooth · 01/10/2021 15:06

I was told seven days for it to work by the pharmacist and not to start until the first day of my period.

DobbleDobble · 01/10/2021 15:47

Hi
I’ve been on mini pill 6 years and have just started everoel sequi patches and am week 6 of patches I think .
Mini pill I had breakthrough bleeding for about first 3 months but tailed off, odd spotting once or twice a year though.
I’ve started on patches because I was getting Peri symptoms , hot flushes on face, restless sleep, constant uti, dry itchy skin.

I’ve noticed skin improvement and no hot flushes nor uti.Sleep slightly better. Only thing bothering me is headaches atm but GP said may get them for first 3 months as side effect.
I can’t say 6 weeks in I feel massively different, but as stated certain things have improved slightly.

Notaroadrunner · 01/10/2021 16:01

I've been on it almost 5 months for heavy bleeding. I'm just after a 10 day bleed but it wasn't near as bad as the 4 heavy days I used to have. I've had a lot of light bleeding and spotting since starting it with no knowing of when that will start or end. My boobs have been really sore at times too. I'm still not 100% sold on it but have decided to give it a full 6 months to see if it all settles down. I dreamed of being period free when I started taking it.

As for signs of perimenopause, I haven't had sweats while on the mini pill, though I wouldn't have had regular sweats anyway, and I think my sleep has improved.

@MercyBooth

I was told seven days for it to work by the pharmacist and not to start until the first day of my period.
It's 7 days for the combined pill and 2 days for the mini pill. If you aren't pregnant you can start at any point in your cycle
dementedpixie · 01/10/2021 16:07

@MercyBooth read this page:

www.nhs.uk/conditions/contraception/the-pill-progestogen-only/

dementedpixie · 01/10/2021 16:10

From the link:

Starting thefirst pack of pills

-choose a convenient time in the day to take your first pill

  • continue to take a pill at the same time each day until the pack is finished
  • start your next pack of pills the following day – there's no break between packs of pills

You can start the progestogen-only pill at any time in your menstrual cycle

If you start it on day 1 to 5 of your menstrual cycle (the first 5 days of your period), it'll work straight away and you'll be protected against pregnancy. You will not need additional contraception.

If you have a short menstrual cycle, you'll need additional contraception, such as condoms, until you've taken the pill for 2 days.

If you start the progestogen-only pill on any other day of your cycle, you will not be protected from pregnancy straight away and will need additional contraception until you've taken the pill for 2 days

Thank You Flowers Flowers Flowers

pudsma · 07/10/2021 13:33

I tried it for about six weeks and gave up with it. I have a non-hormonal coil for contraception, but hoped the progesterone would help to calm down the histamine reactions I was having, as that appeared to make sense from the reading I'd been doing. Turns out it didn't help, plus I bled constantly and had agonising boobs from hell, so that was a short-lived experiment!

MilkCereal · 07/10/2021 13:49

Just updating- I've been on it about 8 days and feel fine- no side effects or spotting yet.
