Does anyone take testosterone?

Nickersnackersnockers · 21/09/2021 08:26

Louise Newson takes the male form I think as testosterone for women is not licensed.

Heard it can be prescribed for women and can work wonders.

Who is on it here?

I thought I'd try DHEA off my own back, and yes, it has boosted my testosterone levels to well above the normal range (they were relatively low before) but I don't actually feel any different. Which makes me think if I was given testosterone (and dropped the DHEA) it would do nothing for me?

I tend to do a couple of blood tests a year to monitor other conditions, which just happen to include hormones, so this is how I know the DHEA did make the difference. The levels of DHEA were very high too!

The boost in oestrogen from the gel (properly prescribed) did make a difference, but my oestrogen was very low pre HRT.

BlackSwan · 07/12/2021 21:03

How much DHEA were you taking Shattered?

My GP has agreed to testosterone which's a step forward but I have to go via the menopause clinic so who knows how long a referral will take?!

Nickersnackersnockers · 23/12/2021 19:26

My GP has agreed to ask the practice menopause specialist if I can start testosterone. She sent me for a blood test to just make sure my testosterone levels weren't too high first.

The menopause clinic has a 5m waiting list so I have a referral letter from my GP and an appointment with a Gynae privately on Tuesday and she will prescribe on NHS . Let's see....

GezFox · 13/01/2022 09:16

So I have been prescribed Testogel . Waiting for the prescription but consultant said a pea sized amount on arm twice a week. A friend has just started and she was told pea sized amount every day on inner thigh? Can anyone else confirm their doses. Thanks 😊

Maxsaidno · 13/01/2022 20:03

I was prescribed half a sachet daily. Queried it as everything I’d read was talking in pea-sized terms (usually daily) and was worried I’d been over prescribed. Nope my (very trusted) specialist said, that’s the amount you need. So I do as she says. It’s bonkers that dosage is so hit and miss though. I also take max dose oestrogen (gel) and progesterone, too. All the HRTs. I’m 40 😑

@DSArnott

Question for anyone who saw a private clinic to get testosterone prescribed…

I know the cost of the private appointment but how much is the private prescription? And once you have tried it would a normal GP be able to do a repeat prescription but on the NHS?

I saw a private clinic first for all my HRT, and have now switched back to getting it prescribed on the NHS. I did ask my GP if he would prescribe the testosterone on the NHS (I now have Testim, which is much cheaper than Androfemme) but he wouldn't. I'm still going to see someone privately for it, as I have much more oomph and stamina whilst on it. I've been on it for 4 months now.

I'm on Testim, and it's a baked bean sized blob rubbed into upper thigh or lower abdomen every day.
Topsyturvey10 · 18/01/2022 18:20

Can anyone offer advice here, I'm on HRT since march (oestrogel and progesterone) and my GP said to see how it goes before considering Testosterone.

I asked again a few months later and another GP, the Menopause Specialist in the practice, relented and said a blood test first to measure T levels.

The result was Sex serum blinding globulin 108

I saw a post on IG referring to 'free Testosterone vs the bonded version' and I'm confused. My level apparently falls within the normal range but their free/bound is confusing me....

ArabellaStrange · 18/01/2022 18:32

Free hormones are the levels that you have circulating in your blood stream. Bound hormones are reflective of the levels that are locked into the cells and therefore not able to be used .

mrsrobin I have just got testosterone prescribed by my GP. Think I wore her down. She referred me to gynaecology but I strongly objected as there is a ten month wait.

Lol! What product will you be on? Please keep us updated on how it goes (if you don't mind of course)!

I saw my GP last year in July and asked if i could have testosterone prescribed as although i have been on hrt for 4 years i always felt that my hrt plan was mot complete, it is not always about oestrogen and progesterone; it is not licenced for women in this country but she prescribed it to me last July on the nhs without a problem, i use a pea size each morning on my thigh or inner forearm, amazing how i regained my energy and sex drive, i feel strong, and ready for anything, i do not suffer from fatigue anymore, it has been a real life changer for me. Oestrogen helped with anxiety, flushes, sleep issues, itching whilst i am in peri menopause; testosterone (Tostran) helped with libido, energy, strength. My GP is a friend of Louise Newson, pro-hrt. I live in Buckinghamshire, i feel lucky to have her as a gp as it sounds like not everyone is getting much help and spending a lot of money for testosterone, i pay the price of a normal prescription and i use so little i still have the same bottle since July 2021.
Note : i have no extra hair growth anywhere, my voice has not changed and i still look like a woman ! Another hearsay which needs to stop, the amount of testosterone is so low.

Thank you for posting this @Discoisabelle - it's really encouraging to hear!

Discoisabelle · 11/03/2022 13:55

No problem hollyhocks7 👍🏽

Nickersnackersnockers · 11/03/2022 17:56

Very encouraging Discoisabelle . I have only just started it. I am hoping it will improve the things you mention plus brain fog, memory, mood and muscle. I am impatient though and don't much fancy hanging on for 6 months to see if it will work. Of course it may do nothing at all!

Love hearing success stories though, I can only imagine how fantastic you feel Flowers

I finally started with testo gel just over a week ago, to add to the Femoston I’ve been taking for around 3 years. Very sympathetic female GP at my surgery prescribed it as apparently my levels were “rock bottom” in blood test I was sent for due to ongoing symptoms. Too early to notice any improvements but I’m taking a 16th of a sachet every day(approximately as it’s very tricky to measure it out!) No extra hair or deep voice yet which is great! So glad to hear some success stories but feel so frustrated that women have to battle to get a hormone that they naturally produce! There’s so many mixed messages & variations in training & understanding in GPs that I feel lucky to finally be able to get to this point & hopefully start to feel like the person I used to be!!
Good luck everyone!

Justilou1 · 25/03/2022 12:11

Thank you for sharing! I am going to discuss with my doctor here in Aus and see if she finally accepts that it’s necessary.

GezFox · 16/04/2022 07:29

Reporting back as now c 3m since I started talking and it really has made a difference to energy, fog , mood and libido . Keep pushing your GPs if you think it could help you as we deserve better 😊

Hollyhocks7 · 16/04/2022 08:31

That's great news @GezFox !

AllTheSunshine · 16/04/2022 08:51

Good news GezFox
I'm on Androfem from the Newson clinic but it's costing £££. Any tips on how I can persuade/insist my GP prescribes it on the NHS please?
It makes me angry that this level of treatment isn't open to all women regardless of income. I can afford it for now (just) - but what about the women who can't?

Flapjak · 16/04/2022 09:12

Is everyone taking 1 pump every two days? I have been on for 6 months, less brain fog, fluctuating energy levels rather than none, but no libido. I wonder if i should do a daily pump and see what happens
