In menopause for 3 years - and suddenly start having periods?

I went into menopause at 40 (totally expected - we have it young as a family) and I've now been in meno and on HRT for 3 years.

I take Oestrogel, testosterone and utrogeston and have never had a period. I've just come through bowel cancer and two major surgeries in five months and about six weeks after my last op I got a period.

GP sent me for scan and it came back as normal, but its just happened again.

I have underlying gynaecologist issues so I'm seeing the gynaecologist next week to check me over, but I'm just wondering if this has happened to anyone else?

Sorry you have had such a rough time.
If you were post menopause at 40, this is classed as premature menopause or sometimes premature ovarian insufficiency) which you probably know.
It's not impossible for some fertility to come back after some time.
There's a lot of info on The Daisy Network website (written by consultant gynaes.) This issue is covered there.

It's probably nothing to worry about.

Jingling I was hoping you’d answer! I will have a look at that.

Thank you

See your doctor.

Any bleeding after such a long time period free is always worth going to see your doctor about.

Do not ignore postmenopausal bleeding

@ThankYouVeryMuchGerry You said you have already got an appt booked with a gynaecologist next week, so that's good.
I expect they might suggest another scan and discuss what might be going on. Good luck :)

Am so glad you said that. I once heard, "If you bleed post-menopause, don't walk to the Doctor, Run".

I was all over the place regarding menopause, as I had NO symptoms, but periods stopped. I believe it was due to thyoid or malnutrition (ED). A few years later, what i thought was a period turned out to be two benign polyps when I had a hysteroscopy.

Still never had a hot flush.

Yay me.

Apparently there is no medical consensus on what to do if a woman has repeat bleeding after getting an all-clear. I had it happen again six weeks after having a hysteroscopy so didn't have any more investigations. But if I get another after six months or a year probably I'll have to go through it all again.

What happens next might depend on what your lining measured after the first scan. If it was close to the borderline they might decide to give you the hysteroscopy just in case. If it was well below - and considering your age - then they might be happy to just accept your system has leapt back into life!

Just an update. Saw my gynaecologist on Saturday and had a scan etc and he says that I'm just fertile again!?
He says when you have such an early menopause it can happen.

Apparently its nothing to do with my endometriosis and adenomyosis, it is just periods. Lining of my womb is fine, no cysts on my ovaries but there are follicles showing so it's definitely periods.

Have to be careful as one of my ovaries is twisting with my uterus and he wants me to have a hysterectomy to fix it, but Ive already had two surgeries this year for bowel cancer so I'm reluctant to have another op.

He has also changed my HRT, which is annoying as I like my HRT regime, but he thinks by changing my HRT I'll have less pain from all my gynaecologist problems.

It's just such a PIA being a woman sometimes!

Do you have a teenager daughter? This happened to my friend when her daughter started puberty.

*teenage

My mum started bleeding when she was in her late 60s (she went through meno at 40 too) and it was polyps. You can say no to your medication being changed if you’re happy with it as well. Glad all is well.
