Oestrogel & Utrogestan 100mg Combo - side effects

Angrybird1970 · 08/09/2021 15:28

4 x Oestrogel/12 days Utrogestan 200mg
This is my second attempt (previously stopped after 6wks as my hair was falling out and acting weird - my hairdresser was really worried about it).
Three years on, I decided to give it another go (it's safer than taking Femston 2/10 & I like the idea of bio-identical as I've always struggled with progesterone).
The pros: I sleep a 'little better' (my continuous symptom since 2013). The cons: Thermostat is off-piste again. 'Angrybird' is an understatement. I am horrid! I know it, but the mist comes down and watch out! I get period pains after sex (thankfully, I have low sex drive, so this is only once a week). I appear to be getting male-pattern baldness (my new hairdresser, has commented how much thinner I am on top - it's frightening as shes only been doing my hair for 4 mths). I have cystic acne all the time, instead of the occasional zit. My rosacea has flared up again, which has been very subdued for a good year or so. As if I couldn't look any more undesirable ..... I think it's causing Hirsutism. I already have enough facial hair for several women, but it's taken off & growing like wild fire.
Has anyone else had this reaction?? I have another appointment with a different Gynecologist in November (private), but I'm 13yrs into this & desperate! I don't want go bald! My chin is growing a second head (with hairs) & the aggression is really horrid (especially for those around me). Any advice would be most welcome???
P.s. I've been taking this combo for nearly 4mths (previously on Femston 1/10 and 2/10).

I think you might look at other reasons for these side effects.
Chin hair etc is down to male hormone patterns and Utrogestan is very much a female hormone.

Has your GP done any blood tests (not for meno just general for everything?)

Angrybird1970 · 08/09/2021 17:16

My GP says the only 3 recognised menopause symptoms are: Hot flushes, night sweats & vaginal dryness. He's told me this 3 times, so I don't bother talking to him, as I strongly disagree with him.

I appreciate that testosterone is the male hormone and it does sound as if I'm turning into a bloke. I have just Googled 'Testosterone Dominance' (I have 3 of the 7 things listed - oh dear!) However, the excessive hair shedding has happened on both occasions, when taking this combo. I have had no other meds changed, so I can't blame that. I'm not stressed either, I take an iron supplement (this has previously helped as I have heavy periods. I take with orange juice, to absorb the iron.

I have decided to stop taking this and have reverted back to Femston 1/10 today. It's not a high enough dose, but it will be interesting to see if some of the side effects clear up.

I have always been progesterone sensitive and was unable to find a contraceptive pill that I didn't react badly to. I've always struggled with hormone imbalance and had bad PMT throughout. I didn't have children, so I know how my body functions, my body just doesn't like progesterone.

Anyway time will tell. November isn't too long to wait & I'm prepared (this time). The new Gynecologist will have so much detail about my Hell, poor lady. Thank you your feedback - much appreciated.

Hi Angrybird. I was in femoston 2/10 for 2 months and my hair was falling out like crazy I stopped for 2 monts. Never Had this before taking Femoston. I am trying oestrogel 26 days and utrogestan 12 days and seems like it does again.
How is it going for you?

Lostmarbles2021 · 24/09/2021 17:04

I have just been prescribed these too and am now a bit concerned. Do you think this is what is causing it? I’m not sure how I react to hormones as it’s years since I have been on the pill but do remember struggling with it.

Hope you find the right thing for you. If this happened to men there would be so much more research and understanding by now.

Angrybird1970 · 30/09/2021 12:00

This is NOT the norm. Sadly, I seem to react to medication. Most women, when they achieve the right prescription, feel so much better. If you feel better, then generally your hair, skin etc is better.

I too,had problems with a suitable pill. Estrogen gave me headaches and progesterone gave me low mood with ever-so attractive acne, so I avoided it.

Please give it try! Baldness for a woman is terrifying, but feeling awful all the time is horrible too. Fix one part of you & wait and see if anything negative happens to your hair :)
