Can you get night sweats without ever having day time hot flushes?

I'm 51, periods still regular as clockwork. For several months, maybe even a year or more, I've been having night sweats that mean you can wring my clothes out and there's a visible wet patch on the bed.

I feel otherwise well, weight stable and have never had single day time hot flush.

I've had a telephone appointment with doc today. I assumed it must be the start of menopause and was just enquiring if there was anything to "do".

He's sending me for blood tests and a chest xray, so now he's got me worried.

Is it unusual to have night sweats, regular periods and no hot flushes as menopause approaches?

I'm 40 and just recently started with night sweats but nothing in the day. Was wondering if it was the start of menopause

I had that initially for about a year before my day flushes appeared.

Acupuncture removed them all.

Thankfully I now sleep better too but I will need to get another treatment soon as I think it may be coming back. But my £60 investment in private acupuncture bought me a good few months of relief. Money well spent! I’d recommend it. It’s got a good track record with women’s things.

I only have had night sweats , like you wringing wet through. I’m on HRT now so they are lots better but I never had hot flushes in the day.

I had a couple of hot flushes initially, then they stopped and I thought "well that was a doddle" - then the night sweats started and have continued on and off for two years now.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 02/09/2021 17:11

I'm the opposite OP - nothing at night but flushes throughout the day. Not sure which I'd prefer!

I suspect your dr is testing for more serious things that can cause severe sweats like lymphoma. But highly unlikely it's that! some gps get a bit fazed if flushed are not the main symptoms.

Yes! Intermittent night sweats here for a couple of years, no daytime hot flushes, I’m 52

vodkaredbullgirl · 02/09/2021 18:00

Day and night here.

I'm 46 and for the last few months I've been waking up in the night sweating, although my house is always super warm so I can't tell if it's just that coupled with summer weather. No day time flushes, although my periods do seem to be lasting longer and getting closer together

JinglingHellsBells · 02/09/2021 18:18

Another thought for you...

I'm on HRT and as it's been long term I'm trying reducing my dose at times.

The night sweats are the things that remain, although the day time flushes are controlled with a low dose.

Sleep patterns and getting hot at night were my main symptoms before HRT, although flushes were hourly, but not so severe I was dripping.

I don't think your experience is unusual- we are all different.
Some women don't have any flushes but do have other symptoms.

Sadly, some GPs really want to hear the words 'hot flushes' before they accept it's menopause.

Spodge · 03/09/2021 18:16

I had night sweats for a couple of years with no other signs of menopause. Eventually I did get the odd daytime feeling of heat, but hardly ever. I'm on HRT now and if I do get a night sweat it is light. They don't wake me and I only notice I'm a bit damp if I get up for the loo. I'm very glad - the previous ones were utterly awful, drenched my PJs and the bed and woke me up shivering cold.

AmandaHugenkiss · 03/09/2021 18:20

Your Dr is ruling out things like lymphoma and TB. I’ve been getting night sweats, anxiety, joint aches but no hot flushes during the day. I think it’s common.

moofolk · 03/09/2021 18:23

@Elieza

Good tip on acupuncture. It's helped me with physical issues before.

Also on the wringing wet night sweats it's horrible.

Some PPs might want to note (menopause for thought?) that night sweats can be an anti depressant side effect.

As lots of women of a certain age have fucking hard lives which are too often pathologised and medicated it can be difficult to tell what is med side effects and what is incoming menopause.

christinarossetti19 · 03/09/2021 18:23

I'm the same age as you, still having regular periods and I get night sweats but no day time 'hot flushes'.

Especially just before my period and if I've drunk alcohol in the evening.

Exactly as pp describe, night clothes wringing wet.

LoveFall · 03/09/2021 18:24

I had irritating night sweats for about 5 years. Wake up hot, throw covers off, go back to sleep, wake up cold, put covers on. Rinse and repeat all night.

I never had hot flashes during the day, just fatigue.

It was tough and it was when hormone replacement was frowned upon due to a study that apparently showed cancer risk. That seems to have been minimized now.

Good luck OP. I ended up with a collection of duvets all advertising they were cooling. DH was getting rather annoyed at the number of duvets we had!

cushioncovers · 07/09/2021 09:13

I have night sweats regularly but rarely hot flushes.

ElvisPresleysSideburns · 08/09/2021 10:14

I'm the same as you OP and only ever had night sweats, nothing in the day time at all. I started HRt in February with Everol patches, which helped with the night sweats. Due to a supply issue, I had to switch to Femoston tablets, which have pretty much stopped the night sweats completely.

ElvisPresleysSideburns · 08/09/2021 10:15

Oops, meant to say 'same age as you'

idontlikealdi · 08/09/2021 10:18

Night time for me. |They come in waves so have them for a couple of months then nothing and then they start again. I'm only bloody 43.

cushioncovers · 09/09/2021 08:20

I agree with other posters anti depressants can give you night sweats. Sertraline is a buggar for that.
