No tolerance for alcohol since menopause - anyone else too?

I've gradually stopped drinking wine over the last few years as I've realised it makes my heart race for up to 24 hours, gives me heartburn and stomach cramps and bloating (sulphite allergy perhaps has been suggested to me?). Occasionally I manage a white wine spritzer spread out over the course of a meal.
So I tend to drink gin instead.

We had people over on Friday night and on Saturday we were out at an evening BBQ. On both occasions I had two G&Ts over the whole evening and both evenings I slept appallingly and felt shit the next day.

I feel so sad - I was never a heavy drinker, but I enjoy socialising with a glass or two, but not if it completely wipes me out for the next day Sad.

Anyone else found this to be YET ANOTHER result of menopause. My friend who is a GP says that developing new allergies and intolerances is common in menopause Angry.

If I have two glasses of wine (which is actually half a bottle) I regret it next day. Feeling tired and looking forward to going to bed that night.
I now never drink the night before work.
I don’t need the alcohol, I just want a ‘treat’ on a Friday and Saturday night. I might have a can of lager instead and see if that’s better.

Can’t tolerate wine any more. Had one glass of rosé last week and woke at 3am with the worst headache ever. I keep trying…!

Meanwhile, gin and tonic is my safest bet.

YES me OP, I thought it was just me, I cannot drink at all now for the violent reaction and I used to love a glass of wine.
Now one glass and I feel like I've been phasered on stun. I couldn't possibly drive on half a glass and champagne now gives me the mother of all migraines.

No, my tolerance and desire for wine has not abated at all. I must admit I've been very lucky and have had no symptoms- no hot flushes, no brain fog etc. Straw poll of friends and about half are the same; periods petered out and that was it. So commiserations. I'd have hated it if my enjoyment of wine had gone!

Me too, but does anyone understand why? Is it a histamine intolerance or something?

hidinginthegarden · 02/09/2021 08:38

Me too! I gave up alcohol after realising it was triggering night sweats and rotten sleep and often the feeling of a hangover before I'd even gone to bed! I stopped wine first and switched to gin for a while but that got as bad! I will occasionally have a g&t at lunchtime but only if I know I can cope with the next day feeling a bit more tired!
Thought it would mean I lost lots of weight - but no! Didn't make any difference but I do feel better for bow having it!

What’s interesting is I used to work with a woman who was nearing the menopause, early 50s for 5 years. Got various symptoms from her (oversharer) but she liked red wine sessions in the pub in the afternoon with my boss (don’t ask!) and got very drunk on a couple of occasions when out with friends.

She did mention she coped better with red wine so that’s what she drank. I do wonder if she had a slight drink problem as she easily drunk a few large glasses every afternoon with my boss!

Piggywaspushed · 02/09/2021 09:42

Oh yes, we call that rule Gazza. Definitely more tolerable. I also drink Doctors Sauvignon Blanc from Waitrose. Onkyn9 per cent. But can still only do two glasses. I never drink during the day just Fridays and Saturday nights. But yes same issues for me...

Piggywaspushed · 02/09/2021 11:52

That should say wine. No idea how it became rule!

Gonnagetgoing · 04/09/2021 10:24

Ok so I tested 1 glass of wine (which I’m never good with!) meeting a friend after work with food.

On the menu it only said wine and beer etc yet behind us were spirits which I’d have been a lot happier with!

Woken up to loud drilling, have family event and picnic to go to. 😣😖😫😩

Don’t have a hangover per se but have slight cold, wolfed half a bag of Hula Hoops last night and feel “tired”. Didn’t do my usual pint of water and berocca trick either. Hmm

That's interesting about New World wines - I'll watch out for that!

Currently if I'm confronted with wine at an event and no option of G&T etc then I'll water it down half & half with fizzy water to make a spritzer. Had a friend be highly offended by this recently though - told me I was 'wasting' his good wine! Shock

I have become less and less tolerant of wine over the past couple of years and would get a hangover after a single glass. Now I get the hangover while I'm half way through a glass so I have pretty much abandoned wine. I rarely drink but prefer a G&T but even those are now starting the same symptoms.

LizzieSiddal · 07/09/2021 11:51

I can tolerate organic wines much better than a normal, even expensive wine. However it’s still only a couple of glasses and with food.

Lunchtimes out I have something like an elderflower spritzer, otherwise even with one glass of wine, I feel grumpy and sleepy all afternoon.
