Bleeding with Mirena Coil

Breathmiller · 10/08/2021 17:29

I had a mirena coil put in 4 & a half weeks ago and have bled every day since. Is this quite normal?

I also had my cervix cauterized 3 and a half weeks ago due to nabothian cysts on the cervix, so maybe that has had an effect too.

I am on the waiting list for an ablation but due to it being possibly a year til that appointment comes through, I agreed to the mirena coil meantime to help with my flooding.

Not sure how long to give it. At least before I had times of no bleeding in between the floods. But this has been constant albeit it is lighter for the most part.

I was hoping it eased at some stage as that was the whole point of getting it. But it has gotten worse again. It could be that I'm having a period right now and that's why it's heavier again but it's hard to tell as I haven't at any point not bled.

I was also advised that the mirena coil would possibly be enough and I wouldn't necessarily need an ablation. But I've spoken to someone who was similar and she had an ablation and said it was the best thing. It stopped her bleeding immediately.

I am just about to turn 51 and have had a year and a half of this heavy bleeding. I have had tranaxemic acid and heavy duty iron tablets at times over the last 20 months. But the mirena coil was supposed to help.

Anyone else had similar?

I had the mirena 5 years ago for flooding caused by peri menopause and fibroids, I had constant bleeding which got lighter and lighter..... I'm not going to lie but this went on for about 5 months. It is quite normal to bleed for up to 6 months as the progesterone is doing its job and thinning the lining of the uterus. Once the spotting and light periods stopped at 5 months it never returned and I've had 4 1/2 blissful years with no periods. I had it removed and a new one inserted yesterday so hopefully this will continue.

The thing with the mirena is patience, you may as well stick with it until you get your ablation appointment, my flooding periods ended with hospitalisation so I was prepared to put up with the spotting.

Bells3032 · 10/08/2021 19:46

Yeah it's fairly common in the first few months. It should settle down after a few months

Bells3032 · 10/08/2021 19:49

Sorry clicked post too soon.

I had bleeding for the first few months and then 5 years with zero periods yay

hardyloveit · 10/08/2021 19:53

I had it January 2020 ish and I had it for the same reason as you and a bit more. I bled for 9 months then since then I've bled for 2 weeks on and 4 days off. This time it's been 6 weeks on and 1/2 a day off.

I'm hoping my gynaecologist app this week he agrees to a hysterectomy

Breathmiller · 10/08/2021 20:10

Goodness hardyloveit. That sounds brutal. Sorry you have been experiencing that for that length of time. Have you been offered an ablation?

Thanks Rosie and Bells. I think if I was just spotting it would be bearable. But it's pretty heavy today. Did yours ebb and flow (ha!) in line with a monthly cycle?

I ad a couple of days of being heavy spotting and thought it was stopping but it's ramped up again.

I also had extremely painful breast tissue in the last week, like premenstrual breast pain but off the wall. So, I wondered if I was ramping up for a 'period'. Even though I hadn't stopped bleeding.

There's a little part of me that wondered if I would have been better just sticking it out with tranaxemic acid until the year came around. At least I got a break in between the floods. Although i also had times where I was close to getting a blood transfusion so probably not.

I'll keep hanging on. My hope is it starts to ease and I can keep this in it until it stops. Then maybe I won't need the ablation. I was told due to my age that I probably wouldn't need a second one in 4 years as I would be in menopause by then.

Thank you for replying. It's useful to hear other stories.

I had bleeding, more than spotting, just enough for a regular tampon every day for 6weeks with low lever period pain. Then for a few months, a bit of bleeding around my period, then nothing!

Breathmiller · 10/08/2021 21:02

hedwig that sounds doable. Thank you. Fingers crossed this a period time and it eases up again.

It is lol. Worse thing is the doctors just don't think it's serious or that bad. Il let you know what my gynaecologist says. I'm praying it's a yes. He said yes last year and I had several procedures done and he said yes I could leave my ovaries in.

I also got immense breast pain.

Yes I've been offered the ablation- I've had it done before too.

I just want it all out now. I don't want anymore children and would prefer to not go through this for another year

Wonderbox · 11/08/2021 08:04

I had a coil inserted after a D and C in February — I had had very heavy bleeding for years because of what turned out to be fibroids, and the coil was intended as an interim measure before proceeding to an endometrial ablation or hysterectomy. Alas my bleeding got heavier and heavier again during July, and I bled the coil out about three weeks ago.

Breathmiller · 11/08/2021 10:18

Goodness wonderbox that sounds awful.

The woman I know who had the ablation had the same, she bled so heavily the coil came out. I was advised to still take the tranaxemic acid if it gets really heavy again to stop that happening. She then had an ablation and said it was the best thing she ever did then went on HRT. She says she feels great now.

I suppose I feel if I need to keep taking the tranaxemic acid for 6 months, I may as well have just kept on going without the coil for another 6 months then had the ablation.

But, I suppose there is the chance that it will settle down and I won't need the ablation. That's the hope of the gynae consultant. Even at the colposcopy clinic the consultant I saw said that the mirena coil was a much better choice and to stick with it. I was told by my gp they would push for the coil over an ablation. Is that because its less invasive, I wonder?

I do have period pains today but the breast pain has stopped so maybe this is a period and it will ease or stop soon.

I hope you get something that works for you soon. This isn't the best fun. Although touch wood, i haven't had many other peri symptoms.

Another plus with sticking with the mirena is that if you decide you want HRT then you already have the progesterone part and just need to add an oestrogen patch or gel which is the gold standard for HRT. I started the patches 2 years ago and have never felt better!

Breathmiller · 11/08/2021 12:51

Thanks Rosie

Can you explain how it has helped you?

I wasn't planning on it but not as against at as I used to be. I seem to be getting there by stealth anyway. Oestrogen pessaries and now the progesterone coil. I am open to hearing about HRT more now. I haven't watched the Davina McCall programme yet but plan to.

I'm particularly interested in how it helps future chances of dementia as my mum has Parkinsons and dementia. Although she did have HRT so whether it lessened her symptoms or not I'm not sure.

I do need to read up more about it all.

You should watch Divina's show. It's quite eye opening all the various symptoms with peri-menopause and menopause most of us are completely unaware of. I was against HRT before and have now spoken to my dr and am getting patches. He seemed to be anti gel, saying not as effective.

I've had a coil for 5 years and am about to change it. For me, it's been fantastic. No more horrific periods, I've had spotting each month throughout but after years of heavy bleeding and pain it's very tolerable

Wimowehwimowehwimowehwimoweh · 11/08/2021 13:13

9 months of bleeding. Every. Day.

I had it fitted due to heavy periods (fibroids)

I asked for it to be removed, they kept telling me I had to give it chance to settle down. By 9 months I walked into the local SH clinic and begged them to remove it, they did so there and then.

The POP also made me bleed daily also.

Breathmiller · 11/08/2021 13:30

That was my worry, that if I decided it wasn't for me that it would be difficult to get it out. I was clear with the consultant about that and she reassured me that at any point the gp would take it out and if they wouldn't she would.

It just shows you how it's not a one size fits all. Every woman has to find what works for them. I will stick with it for a bit longer and see how I get on.

The heaviness already seems to be subsiding so maybe that's the extent of my 'period' and I'll go back to lighter days or even spotting. Although there doesn't seem to be much rhyme or reason to it so far.

Thanks again everyone. Sorry to hear it has made things worse for some of you but it is useful to hear both sides.

I added evorel 50 patches because I started to get awful meno symptoms, dozens of hot flushes a day, night sweats, brain fog and joint pain. The worst though was chronic insomnia, I was averaging a maximum of 2 hours sleep a night... I couldn't drive or string a sentence together.

The relief from HRT was almost instant, I'm 51 and feel better than I did in my 30s! I sleep really well and the increase in energy means I am able to do loads more exercise which means I can keep on top of my weight.

Breathmiller · 11/08/2021 16:02

That all sounds awful. I'm so glad the HRt has helped.

I've been lucky, apart from the bleeding. No night sweats, no hot flushes, I sleep like a log, no joint pain. I did have a bit of brain fog but I stopped drinking alcohol a year ago and it pretty much cleared.

It's just that I bleed like someone switches on a tap. And forgot how to switch it off.

I did have recurring uti's and discomfort due to vaginal atrophy but that has eased with the oestrogen pessaries.
