A month off HRT and I feel really well. Am I out the other side of menopause?

I am not anti HRT, far from it.

I ran out a month ago and my BP was high, so the gp asked me to keep a BP diary before filling my prescription. I just didn't get round to it. Now it's been a month since I took my last HRT tablet and I feel well. Plenty of energy, sleeping well, mood seems very stable.

Is menopause going to come back and bite me on the bum or am I out the other side?

I'm thinking of not bothering getting my prescription filled again.

@Benjispruce5

Thanks *@JinglingHellsBells* I will listen too.
:)

Yes, I'll give it a listen thanks. The two older women in my life - DM and MIL - have very different approaches to the menopause, so it's good to get some facts rather than just listening to their - very different! - opinions.

I’ve been on HRT about 10 years. Am 57 now. I tried coming off it recently and while the hot flushes were still there, they were less severe, but it was the mood swings that made me get back on it pretty quickly!
It makes life bearable.

Just read that link paper @JinglingHellsBells. Very interesting. I did watch the documentaries by Mariella Frostrup and Davina McCall about HRT and they said much the same via experts. I think that the fear is hard to remove as the headlines stay with you. I will definitely look into HRT as my situation changes. Thank you for posting.

@JinglingHellsBells

Know anything about the Somerset menopause clinic? Says its 120 for a consultation then I presume the prescription is also paid for?

Hi Bryony I don't think I do. Is it the one run by a nurse? I've checked out a few sites over the years when posters have mentioned them.

Check out the qualifications of the people there.

Is there a reason you prefer that to your Gp?

There are many shortcomings in nature. I wish people wouldn't use the word 'meant' when it comes to our bodies. They aren't 'meant' to do anything, except reproduce. We start periods at twelve - doesn't 'mean' girls that age should be having babies. Without contraception, we would have numerous babies. Without obstetrics, many of us would die in labour. Without fluoride toothpaste and brushes and dentistry, we'd all be toothless. Without folic acid in pregnancy, far more kids would have neural tube defects. And so on, for antibiotics, vaccines etc. Oh, and without Viagra, many middle aged men would be impotent.

I very much doubt nature 'intends' anything for women past middle age, having outlived our usefulness. We just die or become peripheral members of the tribe. Men can continue to inseminate as pregnancy is not a risk for an ageing male body, but women need optimal, youthful fitness to create and carry and nurture children. Anyway, that's my theory!

Hope you feel better soon.

I think you said you were 57 so maybe you've not been on it long anyway?

(I was almost 53 when I started.)

Bryonyshcmyony · 06/08/2021 11:07

I'm 54

Been on for 2 or 3 years
