Do I really need contraception if I've been going through menopause for 6 years

I'm 51 (hurtling towards 52) & had early menopause triggered by PTSD. I had my daughter at 38 by IVF due to problems conceiving & a mirena coil fitted 2016 as periods had completely stopped & early menopause diagnosed
Last year I started estrogen patches to help with sleeping (which are brilliant) but having now been told I have HPV (diagnosed from my smear) I'm also told the coil is no longer functional for HRT but ok for birth control
The Dr has said I can either leave it in or take it out & start on the pill for contraception
... Do I really need birth control if I've been through the menopause for the last 5 years ?
I'm thinking I'm highly unlikely to get pregnant at 51 (but really don't want to be having a baby at my age Confused)
I'm going to speak to the Dr again but thought I'd seek some opinions Smile

You'd probably get another 2-3 years contraceptive protection from your Mirena .. it's unlikely you would be fall pregnant but what a shock that could be ?
I would leave it in ... or replace it with another Mirena or a Jaydess ?

Haven't used anything for 5 years.. Just turned 50. No mishaps.

My great grandmother thought she was in menopause at 49, and had been for about a year. Turns out she was 6 months pregnant with her 10th child and he was born when she was 50.

Obviously, your circumstances and hers are probably very different, however, pregnancy at your age can happen. Obviously, not frequently, but it does happen. If you absolutely do not want another baby and do not want to deal with an unplanned, unwanted pregnancy, you need to use contraception.

As Aqua I know of a ‘menopausal’ woman actually being pregnant so not unheard of.

Personally I’d be worried about STDs too (unless a trusted long term partner)

And the pain of coil insertion/removal.

So I’d leave the coil in til it needs replaced and rethink then, assuming it being in isn’t causing you issues & you can have HRT or other menopause treatment alongside.

Why don't you just replace your Mirena? Lots of people us it as the progestogen component of their HRT and it obviously provides contraception too. Official advice is that you should use contraception until you're 55.

Thank you all for your thoughts. I'm booked back in with the Dr & will hatch a plan.
