Appointment to have Mirena fitted tomorrow - am petrified

The nurse practitioner at my GP's has been great in response to my request for HRT for my perimenopause symptoms.

She recommended the Mirena coil and oestrogel - I read up about it on here and it seemed to be ok and my appointment to have the Mirena fitted is tomorrow.

She did mention to take a couple of ibuprofen before the appointment 'for the cramping afterwards'.

However I have now read the current thread in AIBU on the pain caused by having a Mirena fitted and I am absolutely petrified. I don't know whether to go ahead and have it fitted or to request a different form of progesterone such as the Utragestan?

Can anyone please reassure me that their Mirena fitting was ok, and that the benefits afterwards were worth it?

@eleflump

Oh god *@Lokdok* - have just seen your post!!!
I think mine wasn’t fitted properly after reading these posts. It was done by a GP and it hurt at the time and kept hurting until they took it out. My legs went funny, I had horrible cramps etc. I didn’t try it again!! After reading other posts, I’m ALMOST tempted to try it again - at a proper family planning clinic!!

I’m someone who found it awful and I’ve had a vaginal birth. My best advice is to make sure you don’t have to drive afterwards as I was so wobbly.

Mumdiva99 · 15/07/2021 22:15

Mine was apparently very hard to get in. Yes it was painful - for oooohhh about a couple of minutes. Then it was done. No mega cramping that I remember. (I'm also on my second). I had it for contraception not menopause - but all my friends have menopause symptoms and I don't - so maybe the coil is why.....

I had one fitted last week. It wasn't nice but it was ok.

Similar to you - I've had large babies vaginally (about 11lbs)

I took 800mg of ibuprofen and paracetamol about an hour before which made a big difference (vs the experience having a different coil a few years ago).

Clamp isn't nice but a pinch in my experience. Same for the measurement. Then I really didn't feel the actual coil go in.

I'm a wimp with these things - I attempted one before kids and it wouldn't go in at all. This was "ok"

I've read the thread you mentioned. No wonder you are terrified. Anyone who dares mention that it wasn't that bad gets flamed.

Thanks again for all your posts- I am definitely going to have painkillers before I go.

Good point about perhaps feeling too wobbly to drive afterwards- I will walk to the surgery as it's close to my house with my mum on standby to pick me up if needed.

Hopefully that's all bases covered so fingers crossed now that it goes ok!

I've had four IUDs, the first before I had any children. Every insertion has been uncomfortable for maybe two, three seconds and that's it. I was period-crampy for about twenty four hours afterwards.

OP just keep telling yourself that it may be a few minutes of uncomfortableness, but you’ll feel loads better re nasty meno-he’ll within days.

Excitedannie · 16/07/2021 12:05

OK don't judge me, but I've had two and barely noticed. In fact, after the first one, I said "have you done it yet" - my 4 month old baby was in the room and we went to meet a friend for hot chocolate after.

The second one I had in my lunch hour and then cycled back to work.

Like I say, don't judge...Grin

gegs73 · 18/07/2021 19:43

Excitedannie I would say the same. I was terrified and had put it off once already but it really was nothing, I’ve had worse smears. It took about 1 minute for the actual procedure (build up was longer). It was uncomfortable but really nothing too bad. Afterwards minimal spotting, very slight cramping then 4 days later nothing at all. I walked then got a train home.

How did it go Op?

eleflump · 18/07/2021 20:45

Hi - the update is that I went to the appointment but she couldn't fit it. Apparently my cervix is very high and also has a lot of scarring - after a bit of pushing and shoving she just said there was no way she was going to be able to do it.

She said she could refer me to a gynaecologist to try to see if they could fit it, but to be honest it has put me off a bit now.

I ended up coming away with a prescription for Evorel Sequi patches - I haven't been to the chemist with it yet though as I'm not overly keen on the idea of having patches stuck to me.

I was a bit flustered and should really just have made another appointment to discuss other options I think but to be honest I just wanted to get out and go home!

Oh how annoying. Can you call an umbrella clinic for a consultation with one of their doctors? I had a phone consultation with them and they were great and likely will be able to properly talk you through your options and whatever the patches mean.
