Utrogestan 100mg how the heck do I take it?

Probably a dumb question but it says take on days 1 to 25 of my 28 day cycle. As I don't have periods anymore do I just make any day day one and go from there ?

Also, the list of risks and cancers and strokes has terrified me dammit. Haven't even opened the estrogen box yet.

Does anyone have any words of wisdom for a new starter please!?

I was told to start the oestrogel first and to be using that for a few weeks and then to take the utrogestan on days 1-12 of every month.

This means that you create your own cycle and also makes it easier to remember when to start and stop the utrogestan.

Hope that helps..

Nickersnackersnockers · 03/07/2021 10:51

Thanks Daisy. I presume you are still having periods then? I've just been on the Louise Newson site and they recommend post menopausal women don't take a break with Utrogestan. Which contradicts the prescription!

I am still having periods although they are very erratic!

Louise Newson site should be right. Have you looked on menopause matters website too? Heaps of info on there and there’s a long ongoing thread about oestrogel and utrogestan which will probably have the right answer for you.

Who px your regime? Mine was from a private menopause clinic and I am able to email them for answers so can you do that?

Sorry I am not sure of what is best for you..

Nickersnackersnockers · 03/07/2021 14:23

Thank you. My prescription is from my GP. Think I'll contact them.

I havent seen the MM site you mention so off to check that out now Smile

1 everyday if your periods have well and truly finished.

Winnona · 03/07/2021 14:48

1 a day in the evening if you haven't had a period for over a year.

Nickersnackersnockers · 03/07/2021 14:55

Oh no I'm even more confused now! The MM site says post menopause to take from day 1 to 25 of my 28 day cycle. Thats the same as my prescription but different from the Louise Newson site

I don't have a cycle anymore Hmm

If you have not had a period for 12 months or more, you take it every day OR every day except for 3 days in the month. This allows for a withdrawal bleed if any lining is there to come away ( probably not.)

You can do either. It's up to you and not a 'big deal'.

Nickersnackersnockers · 03/07/2021 17:19

Thanks Jingle. If I take it with the 3 day gap do I just choose my own day to start.

Why do the two websites give contradictory advice? That was a rhetorical question really but they don't help to ease the confusion!

Sorry for the dumb questions I am really really nervous about starting this!

I was incredibly nervous about starting it too! However I am so glad I did as feel heaps better for being on it. Good luck 😊

JinglingHellsBells · 03/07/2021 17:32

The normal way to take it is to start the 25 days with the first day of estrogen.

The dose on the leaflet in the pack is the 'old way' which is still used by many women. It's there to allow a bleed if there is any lining to come away.

However, most women don't have any blood loss and some drs (not NHS usually) might advise women to use it slightly differently, like every day just to keep it simple. Taking it daily usually means the lining becomes thin (called atrophy) and there is no build up of blood.

Although the info on Dr Newson's website is good, bear in mind that as a dr working privately, she is able to suggest slight variations for her patients.

Please don't be afraid of Utrogestan. It was and is mainly used as a fertility drug. Women trying to conceive sometimes take it in large amounts, like 200mgs 3 times a day!

The risks etc on the leaflet are standard across ALL HRT preparations. Utrogestan is very safe but like all drugs if you have any serious side effects, contact your GP.

Nickersnackersnockers · 03/07/2021 17:42

jingle sorry I'm thick and don't understand your first sentence. I have estrogen patches too, so are you saying I start utrogestan and estrogen together and count 25 days?

Yes just that.

Patch on= day 1
Utrogestan same day = day 1, keep going to 25.

oneglassandpuzzled · 03/07/2021 17:51

I was on utrogestan from the Louise Newson clinic--continuously because I was post-menopausal.

Their continuous Utrogestan routine is to take it every day, mainly because it's simpler to keep track of, I think. So that's what I did.

(I did then switch to taking it every other day vaginally later on.)

Nickersnackersnockers · 03/07/2021 18:26

oneglass that routine seems so much easier to me.

It suited me! The simpler the better...

Open your boxes and get cracking and let us know how you get on.

Nickersnackersnockers · 03/07/2021 18:52

So nervous. I read the leaflet then saw on the Louise Newson site advice not to read the leaflet Shock

@Nickersnackersnockers I'm in the same boat as you as I was very clear to the GP that I had my last period in July last year and a bit of a bleed in March this year so don't have a cycle as such and the instructions on the Utrogestan are to take from day 14 to 28 of my cycle... a bit difficult if I don't have one!

I had a brief, initial chatwith the GP last Wednesday when I requested HRT (she asked me if I could get my hands on a blood pressure gauge) [hmmm] then a further very brief chat on Friday where she asked me to let her know the results of the BP test and sent a prescription straight through to the pharmacy.

I've also read the leaflets for both the Sandrena gel and Ultrogestan capsules and it's mildly terrifying! I'm just waiting for a call back from the GP regarding the cycle issue but to be honest, there are more clearcut answers on this section of Mumsnet!

yikesanotherbooboo · 06/07/2021 19:50

Smoothieooo I'm not sure how old you are but as you bled earlier this year I think a lot of doctors would go for sequential progesterone, particularly if you are under 50. It is a massive pain if you start to get irregular bleeding on HRT with stopping and starting and have to wait for scans so I tend to err on sequential delivery if I am uncertain. Obviously a mirena obviates these uncertainties.
