Am I doing something wrong if I have a withdrawal bleed around day 10 of Utrogestan?

I take 100mg of Utrogestan on days 1 to 12 of the month normally vaginally but sometimes switch to 200mg orally for a few days depending on when I'm using a diaphragm. I often get a withdrawal bleed around day 9/10 and am wondering if I'm doing something wrong or if my body isn't absorbing all the progesterone. Please help mumsnet.

This happens to me too, I assumed it was just my period breaking through, could that be it? Hopefully someone more knowledgable can be along soon.

It's 200mgs for 12 days. It's on the leaflet in the pack.

The 100mgs a day is for women using it every day. I have heard of some women using only 100mgs a day vaginally, but this was a dose suggested by some research (only one study), but it's not actually licensed to use that dose.

Have you been advised to use that dose by a meno consultant?

You are bleeding as not enough is being absorbed and your lining is coming away as the level of progesterone falls.

Thank you @jinglinghellsbells. To use your analogy from another thread does that mean the lawn hasn't been cut? I thought the lining was the grass. Confused

In regards to dose I thought if I was taking Utrogestan vaginally I could half the dose. If I take it orally I take 200mg. Thanks for the correction.

Aren't the lawn and the grass the same thing? Smile

Progesterone stops the grass growing out of control. When you withdraw it, [and this could apply to a fluctuating level absorbed with lower doses some days] the grass sheds itself.

Can I ask who told you to use 100mgs vaginally? (Out of interest?)
All I've ever seen is one research paper where it did say it was effective at 100mgs BUT I don't think it's completely accepted by all specialists that this is safe.

I'm using it vaginally all the time now (after 8 years orally most of the time.) I've not been advised to use half the dose (but I don't use it monthly.)

Lawn and grass are the same thing. I hadn't meant to switch words. I don't want to name the person who told me as I may have misunderstood. Thanks again.

I think the reason for the early bleeding is because you are sometimes altering the dose. I used to often bleed early using it orally. Since I've used it vaginally, I only bleed 3 days after the last capsule. I am going to ask my consultant about using only 100mgs because I'm curious, but I am not on a 4-week cycle ( it's longer) and I feel it would not be safe to reduce it.

I know that some private consultants do suggest using only 100mgs vaginally but that usually comes with the proviso that any odd bleeds can be investigated with a private scan (not something the NHS would do as 'routine'.)

If it's a dr who has suggested it, maybe ask them and tell them about the early bleeds? If it's someone on a forum, that's different.
