Still having periods at 56

Anyone else?

I would like to think it's impossible for me to conceive at this age. But I don't want to test it!

Any thoughts please?

I know quite a few women still having them at 55.. I'll be 50 soon and they are still going strong!

I was the same as you. Had no menopause symptoms, I just kept on having periods. They started to get very heavy. No pain, just more of a nuisance.
Went to see a gynaecologist and a scan showed fibroids.

So I don't know when my periods actually stopped and the fibroids began.

About two years after first visit to gynaecologist (after various attempts at medication to stop the problem) I had a full hysterectomy.

Almost 50 and no sign of even peri symptoms! It's a good thing isn't it?

Opentooffers · 15/05/2021 09:58

There are benefits, probably protects against osteoporosis and heart disease, but is also a risk factor for breast cancer, which was the only risk factor my mother had. She was 57 when periods stopped. Happily she is still alive and well and late 70's. I'm nearly 50, but I think just getting peri as periods heavier and closer together, frequent headaches which I used to rarely get, nausea, brain fog tiredness. All great when working full time in critical care and covid gear Sad

It is probably impossible for you to conceive. But the oldest recorded natural birth is 56. Most guidance says after 54 it's nigh impossible and if conception does occur it usually ends in miscarriage. It would be highly unlikely to go full term at 56.
All I'd say is that you need to be sure these are actual periods and not bleeding that could be a sign of something more serious.

This!

I keep reading on here women saying your chances of conceiving at 40 are low, and over 45 nil so you need donor eggs to conceive.

Yet here I am at 50 still having a normal, regular cycle. But no way am I going to test it.

Was anyone else late starting? I was 15 I think so about the last in my class..

Do some research /reading online on this.

Regular periods do not equal fertility. Most cycles in the 50s as anovular- no ovulation. And ovulation is no guarantee of conception. It's also about egg quality and implantation, and the quality of sperm which declines as men age.

JinglingHellsBells · 15/05/2021 10:25

Also :) 50 is not old for regular periods. Average menopause age is 51 and the range for periods is 45-55. Mine stopped just before 53.

Pretty sure my degree including a semester on reproductive biology has informed me as well as any “reading online”.

I didn’t say it was easy to conceive over 50, or likely.

Just that many people seem to think it’s impossible. Personally I don’t feel the need to test that theory Grin, but clearly it isn’t impossible as late/menopause babies can and do happen.

Put it this way, I’m not stopping contraception any time soon, no matter how unlikely I am to have a successful pregnancy at my age.

Ha yes.

Glad I'm not the only one anyway.

My periods are not regular, but they keep on coming. This month I've been blessed with two. Hmm

@Opentooffers Thanks for the heads up re breast cancer. I'll make sure I check for changes.

I think mammogram screenings have stopped in my area due to covid.
