How do you know if you're having the menopause if you have a Mirena coil?

Just that really!
I'm 49 and had a coil for 9 years and no period, how did you know?

You can't tell by periods but when it's time you will probably get some of the usual menopausal symptoms - flushes, sweats, moods, poor sleep.

Thanks @JinglingHellsBells

I'm still not really sure at 54. I have had a few years of brain fog, increased anxiety etc but no physical symptoms as yet.

oneglassandpuzzled · 03/04/2021 15:42

All that, plus in my case, a sense of doom. Despite being usually fairly upbeat.

And weird aches in random joints for no obvious reason and despite lots of exercise.

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 03/04/2021 15:46

Yes I’ve wondered this as well, had one this time last year and the Dr said ‘this one should see you through the menopause’ but I was only 45 so quite surprised that it would see me through.

Dramalady52 · 03/04/2021 15:53

Blood tests are the only way to tell if you have gone through the menopause if you have the mirena.

DramaAlpaca · 03/04/2021 15:57

I got my Mirena at 46. I already knew I was perimenopausal because my periods had started going haywire a year or two before, and that's why I got the Mirena. It stopped my periods completely, which was great.

I still had other symptoms, mainly a rise in my body temperature which could be uncomfortable but no flushes as such. Also random aches and pains, but nothing like the horrendous symptoms some women get.

In Ireland where I live the advice is that the Mirena can be left in for seven years if you have it put in at 46 or over, based on the average age of menopause being around 51.

I had mine taken out at 53, I felt it was time and that I was almost certainly through the menopause given my age, but I still kept my fingers crossed for the first few months, just in case!

Symptoms in my case - I'm 48 and on my 3rd Mirena coil, but about 18 months ago started getting hot flushes, mood swings, mild urinary incontinence, wild irritability and major brain fog. Blood tests revealed nothing as hormone levels fluctuate so much from one day to the next, but luckily my GP followed NICE guidelines and prescribed HRT based on symptoms. I started Estrogel last year, and combined with B vitamins and Omega 3, things improved significantly. My mood has settled and the fogginess has lifted. Unfortunately I suddenly lost a lot of hair about 3 months ago, which may or may not be menopause related, but I added biotin to my vitamin regime and its stopped thinning now and started growing again.

Biggest problem now is roseacea!

Eloisedublin123 · 21/04/2021 21:35

Do you mind me asking please- do you take your oestrogen gel/ patch every day?(With no break) I got a new mirena in in December and got oestrogen patches then too for menopause symptoms (although I’m only 47) and as I have a patch on every day I’ve never bled
Is this ok do you think?

Eloisedublin123 · 21/04/2021 21:36

Ps try the kalme range for roseacre it’s great!

Soontobe60 · 21/04/2021 21:38

Had a mirena fitted aged 45 for horrendously heavy periods. Periods stopped completely within 6 months. Had a few hot flushes in mid 50s, some aches and pains but nothing else. Still got it in! (I’m 61so assume have gone through menopause)

wombatgoeswild · 21/04/2021 21:42

Soolantra for the rosacea. It's prescription only but worth the faff.

I'm also 49 with 11 years of the coil, assuming I'm menopausal as I'm very foggy. Bit anxious. No other clue.

Good Question! I am on Mirena - 14 years, am now 49. Had my last one put in at 47 and was surprised when the dr said I would need to have 1 more! Every time I get a bit hot / moody etc I think is this it?!
ConnieCaterpillar70 · 21/04/2021 21:52

I had my latest one put in at 47 and was told I can keep this one for 7 years. I've had one every 5 years since aged 32.

I do get odd light random bleeding, but no other symptoms touch wood (am 50). So I've got no idea, tbh.

Eloisedublin123 · 21/04/2021 22:09

No one else on oestrogen as well as mirena 🧐

brittanyfairies · 21/04/2021 22:17

I have been on the mirena for 17 years, no periods.

2 years ago I experienced major hot flushes, it was dreadful, plus dreadful brain fog.

Blood tests said I was through the menopause. I take oestrogen and progesterone and I haven't had my coil removed yet. If I don't take the oestrogen the flushes return

Eloisedublin123 · 21/04/2021 22:24

Thanks! Do you mind me asking how old you are? I’m 47. Ps love your user name!

brittanyfairies · 21/04/2021 22:31

I'll be 50 next month, I think I started with serious hot flushes at 47. I stuck it out for as long as possible but at one point I was having them every 15 minutes. I'd actually believed the mirena would protect me from the symptoms. HRT has been a life saver.

Eloisedublin123 · 21/04/2021 22:32

Thanks for that! And do you take the oestrogen every day without break? I do

brittanyfairies · 22/04/2021 09:34

Yes oestrogen every day in the form of a gel. I have a 7 day break in the progesterone

Eloisedublin123 · 22/04/2021 09:55

Oh that’s interesting I don’t take progesterone as I was told it’s in the mirena 🧐

confuseddotcom090 · 25/04/2021 19:13

I have no periods , and have had mirena since having my son (now 12).

I went in estrogen patches a year ago because of menopause symptoms. Main one was indigestion, but also low mood, brain fog and aching joints. Went private as GP was "you're too young" (I was 47)

Eloisedublin123 · 25/04/2021 19:26

Thanks 😊
