Menopause after total hysterectomy

Hello

So, bear with me this is a long one, I've had an abnormal smear and biopsy which came back as pre cancerous cells no cancer.
Letter said repeat smear 6 months discharged to GP.
Got a letter to say outpatient appointment made for end of April, I've rang the hospital to ask why and they have said after a review I require further treatment and the questions they will ask is , if I want more kids.

Soo perhaps Im reading to much between the lines but I'm seeing that as they are going to suggest a hysterectomy. I am fully for it if it prevents cervical cancer.

My question is, following the hysterectomy I understand I will start the menopause.
Can anyone offer advice , tips on what medication I should enquire about.

I'm concerned around mood swings and depression. I have two kids , one being 6 months old. I also have a history of anxiety and that tends to flare up after major life changes and hospital stays.

Sorry to hear your news. But maybe it's best to wait and see what they want to do? It's a bit jump from 'treatment' to a hysterectomy. I believe (happy to be corrected) that removal of some of the cervix may be one type of treatment, or a partial hysterectomy (lower part of womb and cervix.) Even if they did offer that, menopause only happens immediately if they removed your ovaries and that's never done unless necessary.
Maybe post on the women's health forum for advice on what might happen at your appt?

Thank you for responding, I too am hoping I'm jumping to conclusions but they way the lovely lady on the phone said they will base treatment on how I answer if I want more children has me wondering.

To be honest I thought that they had removed the cells required based on the discharge to gp and repeat smear in 6 months.

Good to know re the menopause is only if they remove ovaries

So you've already had a leep/loop procedure?
I think hysterectomy comes after to his line of treatment first.

After this

Well I think I've had a leep/loop. They called it a lletz . I think that's the same thing, I could be wrong.

I just don't quite understand how one letter says pre cancerous cells but no evidence of cancer, discharge to gp with follow up smear in 6 months to "you need further treatment" seems to be a huge leap.

The lletz results letter would likely say that you need treatment as they treat it as a biopsy sample - but you already had the procedure so you go to your GP in 6mo for a 'test of cure' ( smear to test for hpv).
That would be my understanding.
Very confusing though.
Confused

Helpsmearresult · 01/04/2021 15:04

Yeah that's what I thought.

The letter said

"The results of the lletz and biopsy showed pre cancerous cells but no evidence of cancer, I can now discharge you to your GP with a smear for a test of cure in 6 months on the 4th September"

Then the next line said

"We will discuss your biopsy results on the 31st march at our monthly management meeting"

I then get the letter today simply saying I had an outpatient appointment in April with gyno so I had to ring and ask why.

Why not call your GP (make an appt) and ask them for clarification or they phone up the hospital? Clearly it will affect the GP too as they are expecting you in 6 months.
BTW I think it's quite unprofessional for someone on the end of the phone to tell you ' it matters if you want more children'. That's pretty awful and will put the fear of God into anyone. They really ought not to go into details like that unless they are the consultant and prepared to tell you why.
