So can some please advise me on what to say to the doctors about HRT. Im peri meno.
Just off the phone dedcribed all my symptoms. Iv been suffering for months till i researched hrt etc.etc
So by the tone of the conversation its like she doesnt want to prescribe hrt because my sister is getting treatment for breatcancer.
So what do i say to her next week when i go in for my proper appointment?
She says there alternatives
What could these be except from everything else im after trying herbal, eat healthy
Feels like im begging for to be put on hrt.
Is that even normal in these days

If there is a family history of breast cancer, then your GP will probably advise you that HRT is inadvisable for that reason, sorry.

Kimbo180 · 25/03/2021 15:38

Forgot at add my other sister is on hrt on the gel patches

I've had breast cancer and was refused HRT. I know it's disappointing but there are good reasons for it.

Kimbo180 · 25/03/2021 15:46

But i dont understand if there giving it to my other sister and not to me?

You can take hrt even with a family history of breast cancer, but GPs are anxious to prescribe because of the increase risk. It's likely you would need to be referred to a menopause expert where you can discuss in more details these risks against the benefits, depending on your age, if you are in peri or full meno and taking into consideration other risk factors (weight, alcohol consumption, smoking, sedentary lifestyle etc...).

TheRedBalloon · 26/03/2021 08:01

I'd love to go on HRT, I'm 47 and having awful peri symptoms. However strong family history of BC so GP won't even consider prescribing it, I trust her implicitly so I'm just muddling through as best I can.

Also be aware that some natural remedies are not suitable wrt to BC. (Weak estrogenic effect.)

I take high dose Vit C and D, magnesium, folic acid, Immunace, and B12 jabs.

Torres10 · 26/03/2021 15:20

You have no hope via a GP with a family breast cancer link.
You either need to see if there is a menopause specialist in the practice that might be a better option or if you can afford it go and get a private consultation. Paying for a private consultation is not cheap unfortunately, but you can ask direct questions and get direct answers, and given you do have a risk, they will be able to provide you with some quantification of that so you can make an informed decision.
If you then decide to go HRT route, you may be able to get is on the NHS on an ongoing basis, but it will always be hard won.

I think the risk calculation could be different for someone who becomes menopausal due to a hysterectomy - the earlier someone goes through menopause the greater the risk of menopause related problems, which may outweigh the risks of breast cancer in your sister's case but possibly not for you. Hope you get some good advice, I'm just dipping my toes into this world and it seems a woefully-underresearched minefield.

Kimbo180 · 26/03/2021 16:56

I'm pretty sure you are able to have hrt. I believe after speaking to my Gp, that as long as you are aware of the risks, then you can have it. Women who have breast cancer can still get vaginal hrt as the amount is that small. There is cancer in my family and I'm on the patches, I'm through meno at 45.

Kimbo180 · 26/03/2021 20:35

So heres something iv havnt explored
If i went in a low dose birth control do any of yous think it might help?
I havnt been on birth control in about 2 years
Just trying to explore my options

What age was your sister when she was diagnosed with breast cancer? The risk is greater if you have a close family member diagnosed before they turned 40. The specialists don't tend to worry so much if they were diagnosed after 40.

Also, was your sister given any more information on the genetics of her breast cancer and if it's a type that runs in families? If so they would usually offer you testing. This is all the sort of information you should be taking to your GP.

Kimbo180 · 27/03/2021 14:03

Yeah i might actually ask for that test.
Shes 48. She finishes treatment in june.
Im not sure i must actually ask her.
