Premature menopause concern

Lovelyyy · 12/03/2021 18:03

After years of Ivf I was fortunate enough to have a baby last year at age 35.
One of my fertility issues was that I had low ovarian reserve. At 31 I was diagnosed with an amh of 9 and in the lead up to my pregnancy at age 34 I had fhs results of 13, 11 and 9.5.
I am now 36 and am concerned that I may be going through the peri menopause as I have been experiencing hot flushes at night and have been finding it difficult to sleep.
Do you think this is a possibility ? When I have mentioned this concern to others they have said that I am being silly.
I would really appreciate any thoughts / advice that anyone may have.

It is a possibility

Lovelyyy · 12/03/2021 19:59

Thank you for replying. Do you think the fhs results indicate peri menopause?

It’s possible. Your GP can give you a blood test - not 100% but a good indicator.

Op, I was peri at 34, went through menopause at 43. My Gp didn't take me seriously at all and i was waking up to 10 times a night, night sweats, hot and cold flushes to name a few. Blood tests don't give a definite yes you are no your not. I believe it's based on symptoms.

Lovelyyy · 13/03/2021 06:41

Thank you for replying. It sounds like you had a difficult time with your symptoms. It’s a shame they your Gp wasn’t more supportive. Did you end up being diagnosed with peri menopause before you went through the menopause?
It’s difficult for me to know if some of my symptoms are due to exhaustion from looking after my baby. It is the hot flushes combined with the fact that I know that when I was doing Ivf that I had a higher than normal fsh, which has made me worried.

Gp diagnosed peri for about 4 months. Got an emergency app with a gynae who when I told him last period was 2018, said I was through meno. I needed treatment years ago as I have atrophy now as well. I'm playing catch up with hrt, trying to get things under control.

Keep a diary of your symptoms and how frequent. Look out for changes to period, length and heaviness. Mine got closer together and heavier. The sleep thing was my first clue. Hot flushes tend to be with me anyway really intense on my face and lots of daytime sweating as well as at night. Duvet on duvet off and repeat.

I started with symptoms at around 38. Going on the pill helped for a couple of years but I had to stop due to other health factors. I’m now on HRT and have been since I was 42. Based on family history I’m not expecting to actually go through the menopause for another decade. 10-15 yrs of symptoms would have made life unbearable. For me the physical symptoms were bad but mentally I was in a very bad place prior to HRT.

Recommend the Balance app for recording symptoms and Dr Louise Newson’s site for lots of good info.

Tootsey11 · 13/03/2021 11:11

My mum went through meno at 56, me 43. Family history can't always be relied upon.

Thank you for all your replies.
I will make a note of possible symptoms and will see what my doctor advises! I wouldn’t be surprised if it is early menopause as I know I have low ovarian reserve, which has never been a problem for anyone else in my family.

I had a telephone call with my doctor and she said that I was right to be concerned and that I should make an appointment for blood tests. She said that it didn’t matter what day of the month I had the test and that if I was entering peri menopause my fsh would be above 20 and if I had entered menopause my fsh would be above 40. In the meantime she recommended I take vitamin d, evening primrose and a good multi vitamin.

Age you breast feeding still? I had lots of hormonal highs and lows due to breast feeding. Each time my milk came in I shook and sweated all night. I’m not sure if that’s common but for me it was! I just wondered if there was a chance your hormones were still being affected by having had a baby not that long ago 🤔

Lovelyyy · 15/03/2021 10:08

Thank you for getting back to me. I didn’t produce much milk so wasn’t successful at breast feeding. My baby did go through a bad sleeping patch and so I could just be run down.
I have read that fsh should be tested on day 3 of the cycle but my blood tests which include the fsh test will take place later in my cycle. My doctor said this wasn’t a problem - do you agree ?

I started my peri at 38 but I had no idea. At 42 I diagnosed with early meno and started hrt after having terrible symptoms and I am still on it at 45. It sound possible to me.

GJMJ · 30/03/2021 22:44

It's completely possible, I have just turned 39 and sought advice from the GP regarding irregular periods and not conceiving. First blood test showed FSH to be 10 and she basically said nothing was wrong with me, so we paid for a fertility clinic who diagnosed premature ovarian deficiency, my second blood test gave a FSH of 84!!!! Now waiting on a referral to the hospital for HRT, I had zero idea this was even possible until 4 weeks ago, it's heartbreaking Sad
