Pregnancy one year, perimenopause the next?

Just wondering if this would be a feasible thing?

I’m 48 and had my third (and last 😅) baby last summer. My periods have not returned yet but I’m EBFing so not unexpected.

Recently I’ve been having lots of hot flushes and mood swings. Could be just postpartum hormones settling but it got me thinking. Would it be possible to go into the menopause so soon after giving birth (8 months ago)? I know I’m probably not super fertile anymore but I assumed a bit of a holding pattern of a few years before MP kicks in. How many years after your last child did you have the menopause and how old were you?

Wow, congratulations on your baby! We have tried for a second but at 49 I've given up. I'm def peri. My periods didn't return for a year after having DS at 41. We should have tried harder for another after that but it was never the right time and I was so tired it never happened.

Boosey - thank you. Tbh I thought I was in Peri before dd came along as although my periods were still pretty regular I did have night sweats and my pmt got a lot worse. I think anything is possible and if you want a second child you should keep trying - it’s not over till the fat lady sings. There are 9 years between my second and third child!

@Sobloodyexhausted.. Thank you for replying. Yours is an inspiring story. We have been kind of TTC for about 4 years but admittedly not very seriously as our situation would not allow for a second but now as I edge ever closer to menopause I'm feeling more and more upset and desperate about it and only wish we'd tried harder! I'm so scared of being 50 next year but I am so grateful for DS.

Sobloodyexhausted · 12/03/2021 10:01

I’m sorry that must be really tough. Your DS is obviously so loved and so lucky. I hope you find peace in whatever happens for you (and that you get lots of lovely grandchildren a few years down the line!) 😊

Ah, thank you for those kind words Smile. I hope you have an easy time of it but I have a feeling it's not menopause but hormones as I do recall feeling similar when i was ebf'ing!

Congratulations on your baby!

My periods didn’t return after I had my second dc, and found I’d gone through menopause, I was 32. I was going for some investigations before I got pregnant, then didn’t because I was pregnant by the time the appointment came through, so feel very lucky to have had both dc!

I was having hot flushes, brain fog and emotions were haywire. Doctor suggested it could be bf’ing and tiredness from baby but checked my hormones in case.

HRT sorted all the symptoms really quickly for me.

Wow Camper that’s really interesting. I guess pregnancy acted like natural HRT and masked it somewhat? I’m really glad you got to compete your family.

Congratulations on your baby! I had my twins at 42 and I believe when they were about 6 months old my peri started. I had a missed period and was feeling seriously depressed and rubbish. It was taken for pnd and I've spent the last 3 years wondering wtf was wrong. I'm now convinced it began way back then.

My mum fell pregnant with my sister at 42, having TTC for it 4 months (had mirena before).

Less than a year later, she was full on into the perimenopause.

I went into peri at 43, same age as her but last pregnancy (which resulted in miscarriage) was at 38.

Congratulations on your baby.
