Anyone else struggling losing weight with menopause? Seriously considering diet pills to give me a kick start, am walking between 5k and 10k at least 5 times a week and have cut back on eating but seem to be getting largerSadI have been fat shamed on a few occasions lately and it's affecting my mind so much, I hate myself...

WTH fat shamed you? That appalling, so sorry Flowers

Are you on HRT? I’m actually thinner now than I’ve ever been in my life because I started weighing and logging everything I consume on My Fitness Pal. I don’t exercise due to health issues so lost the weight through diet choices only.
It’s helped me lose 2.5 stone just by seeing where calories add up, I wish I had educated myself when I was young enough to wear the outfits I now could fit into.
You can eat as healthy as you like but if you eat too many calories you won’t lose. Some ‘healthy’ sandwiches can be more calories than a roast dinner!

Work out your tdee on this link then reduce that amount by 20% to get your target calories. Don’t add your exercise onto MFP -it gives you calories back, if you eat them you will gain weight!

You need to log everything. Every cuppa, every biscuit, every glass of wine, every slice of meat you have ‘just to test’ when you are dishing up a roast dinner, it really will show you where hidden calories add up and help you make better food choices long term.

Thank you for your reply, it was a so called friend and her husband and although I know I've put a lot of weight on (lockdown hasn't helped) just don't need it pointed out to you do you.. do you think HRT will help? I have the coil so don't know if I get the full symptoms but I am just like mum who went the same when she hit menopause, and am at the right age for it as well.. thank you for the link i will have a look at that, I had fitness app but might re install again, as you say I could think am being super good but all the hidden calories mount up, I can't do any vigorous excercise myself due to health but walking am good with..

It's tough as you get older. I'm struggling - but have lost 3 stone in the last year, really by cutting out sugar (no chocolate, cakes, biscuits) and trying not to eat after 6pm when we have our tea.

Exercise really doesn't help - I've done lots in the past, but can't now. The only real way to lose weight (sadly) is to eat less, particularly of crap foods.

I found in my 50s that I can no longer have 'just a couple of crackers and cheese' as supper. Or 'cup of tea and a scone' at 10pm because I feel peckish.

I let my weight creep up by 1lb a week...and over a year you've suddenly put 4 stone on. It's easily done (and depressingly hard to get off).

Agree with Howdoin that you just need to be really clear on what you are eating.

Actually strength exercise using bodyweight or weights to build muscle can help with weight loss. As we age we lose muscle mass and building more muscle mass means you can be burning more calories even when you're inactive. Weight bearing exercise is also good for bone density iirc.

Thank you for your replies means a lot, I've installed the my fitness plan app and will make sure I Log Everything I eat, I heard weights help so might have to invest in some light weights maybe, I just don't want to be fat and 50 anymore, I feel like I've given up on life and maybe the fat shaming has given me the kick start to sort myself out.. I know how you feel. I also walk a lot, averaging 43 miles a week, but this isn't enough. I started to write everything down & noticed a difference. Unfortunately during my birthday week I put it back on again so back to my pen & paper.
It's not so much the weight that upsets me, but the weird shape that I've become Confused

IstandwithJackieWeaver · 11/03/2021 19:05

@Nannie1989 - I started last year with a vow not to be fat and middle aged. I can't do anything about my, but I joined a gym that specialises is weight loss and strength training. I've done at least three sessions a week and followed, mainly, their diet advice. I've successfully lost weight and my shape has transformed. I feel as though I've got me back, if that makes sense.

IstandwithJackieWeaver · 11/03/2021 19:06

About my age that should say.

Each session is only 45 mins so easy to fit in.

Have you had your blood tested for diabetes/sugar levels?
Losing weight during menopause is so hard due to hormonal changes and if your insuline is elevated, it is pretty much impossible.
