Hi, I'm just starting to look into this following prolonged heavy periods. I'm under referral via the NHS but expect quite a wait.
I've been quoted £380 for scan and results
And £200 for assessment via phone and then £80 for gynae scan, presumably with consultation after to discuss results/treatment.
Has anyone else been down this road?

Could you link to those? Little more info would help as the prices you list are very different.
Where are these taking place, who reads the scan, who calls you with the results?
Usually, it would be one fee for the scan (which varies a lot depending on location, who does it and their level of medical expertise, who reads it...) and then another fee for your consultation with a consultant to advise on what the scan shows and any treatment recommendation.

I'd been told during IVF that I had polycystic ovaries so I put my very heavy and painful periods down to that, after a few years I thought I'd get it checked to see if it was better or worse so I had a scan here www.ultrasound-direct.com/women-ultrasound-scans/ - I opted for the upper abdo and pelvis as it wasn't much more to make sure all the other bits and bobs around there were okay. It turned out I don't have polycystic ovaries but I did have large polyps - thankfully the NHS removed them and I got a hormone coil in at the same time to stop them coming back and my life has been much, much improved.

I'm not sure why I am giving you more info than you need but the prices were less than you have been quoted and they were very good so worth checking out if there is a clinic near you.

I think it's wise to be cautious about private scans because there's a huge difference in expertise. With any scan for anything, you are relying on the judgement of the person reading it to make the right decision over what looks normal and what doesn't. Sometimes it can be very obvious- like a polyp or fibroid- but there can be other issues that need an expert opinion.

Scans carried out by radiologists working alongside gynaes tend to be a lot more expensive than scans done by sonographers/ technicians, who would pass the scan data onto someone else to interpret.

If it's heavy periods in meno, the cause is more likely to be hormonal , or a fibroid.

I've seen someone privately. For a transvaginal scan and consultation it was around £350. I am in Northern Ireland. There is an additional cost for a biopsy as well.
