Perimenopausal heavy bleeding, what did you experience

So I've been querying early peri (I'm 39) for 18 months now due to irregular periods, anxiety, irritability and hot flushes.
The nice guidelines make no sense to me.
I was happy to bumble along until it felt like I was reaching a crunch point. I now have. I've been bleeding heavily (overflowing superplus tampon and pad with wings after 1-2 hours) for coming up six weeks with a one week break for pregesterone so I could have an exam.
I'm now waiting ultrasound and maybe gynae referral to rule out other causes.
I feel ok, I'm a SAHM so just keep on top of changing sanitary products, although contemplating a moon cup to monitor volume lost.
I had bloods six weeks ago and have more in 2 weeks.
I don't really want to take the artificial progesterone again due to side effects (MH) but know I can't indefinitely bleed either without becoming anaemic.

I feel quite sure it's peri as two generations on my mother's side have suffered similar presentations but also I'm keen to do this properly and rule out a fibroid or anything more sinister.

Any experiences, thoughts advice would be welcome

Talk to your OB or GP, to r/o anything concerning.

However, this sounds like my peri - very VERY heavy periods where I was changing XL tampons every 2 hours and even that wasn't enough. It got to the point where I was booked for an ablation.

You will have to discuss with your OB re: what to do! I unfortunately put up with it for several years.

I hope you are getting enough iron etc?

HazeyJaneII · 16/02/2021 18:59

I am in perimenopause (I'm 51) before being prescribed tranexamic acid, I was having to wear 2 pads and a super+ tampon and having to change all that very frequently...and the night times...jeez, awful.
It's a lot better with tranexamic acid, but still pretty horrendous, and they go on for ages. I also have to take pretty full on iron as my iron levels were very low.

I ended up having the mirena coil as my periods were so unpredictable. I'd have really heavy flooding one month then skip one altogether. I now don't get them at all which is marvellous 😊

If they rule out any other underlying cause it might be worth considering.

Thanks for the replies. Does anyone know how I would go about getting a private gynae appointment? The NHS atlre doing their thing and the next step is an outpatient ultrasound but I'm keen to get this sorted one way or another asap

I had this and thought it was my age. It did turn out to be fibroids/polyps though.

What was the duration from seeing your GP to getting the scan Cherry? And has everything resolved since treatment? Ablation?

@AwaitingEarlyPeriDiagnosis

Sorry - just seen this. I had to wait a few weeks for the scan which was done in my GP practice. The scan found fibroids and a polyp. I was then booked to have them removed in hospital under local anaesthetic - I had the procedure but they were too difficult to remove, so I’m now waiting to have them done under general anaesthetic. COVID has meant the op keeps getting cancelled. Been waiting over a year now 😣

Total brain fog today, but I think it was a hysteroscopy...

I am somewhere in perimenopause (I'm 52) and my last period was so bad ( I lost about 4 pints of blood in a couple of weeks) I ended up having a blood transfusion. I had an urgent biopsy last week and so the results are not in yet. I've chosen not to take hormones and I'm trying to re-build my iron levels with floradix and spatone (at pregnancy dosage). The blood transfusions got me up from an iron level of 6 to 8. I am feeling a bit better - though anxious about the bio. I do recommend using a mooncup - although I was filling it almost as soon as it went in (maybe every 20 minutes or so) - it is useful to monitor the blood loss and isn't as irritating as putting tampons in and out. I also bled for 6 weeks and really should have gone to the GP sooner - I've been given a huge box of tranexamic acid which does help. Assuming there is nothing sinister in the bio - I'm hoping they'll be able to give me an endometrial ablation.
