Low sex drive in menopause

I am menopausal and have very little sex drive. My partner is rampant as always. I really don't know what to do. Sex is very important to him and whilst I agree that it's important, I rarely feel like it. Should I just force myself? Will it come back?

Op, in the same boat. Personally I don't give a monkeys if I never do it again. I'm 45 and have VA and Ls to deal with on top. I'm on hrt and it's supposed to help low libido, not working that way for me. If I still could do it without pain I probably would, but I've tried and am in agony. My advice, talk to him about it.

Testosterone gel in addition to your HRT should help. I was only prescribed it when I saw a private consultant but my GP is now happy to prescribe it in an ongoing basis.

Testosterone gel sounds interesting. I'm not on HRT. I am 53, haven't had a period for 11 weeks and have had hot flushes. In general so far it's not been too bad, the worst thing is no sex drive.

I am exactly the same, not yet menopausal but 0 libido. I was looking into testosterone gel, however this is not available in the UK for libido. So many items for men but nothing to help ladies xx

Yep I hear you! I’m 52 totally menopausal and have been since starting breast cancer treatment 5 years ago (haven’t had a period in 5 years). My libido has got up and gone and I have vaginal atrophy. I can’t have HRT because my cancer was oestrogen positive.
I don’t know what the answer is and it worries me.

This happened to me. I didn't realise what was happening at the time and put it down to having a relatively young child/not sleeping and other stuff. I made an effort but it was far less than what my husband wanted. 6 months later I found out my husband had been secretly watching porn. Things have not been right since. I wish that I had realised what was happening and could have talked about it. The problem then was, that after intimacy stopped (I am furious about the porn thing and view it as sleazy and unethical but my husband didn't agree and thought he was doing me a favour by not hassling me - the problem is all mine apparently). I then found it hard to trust my husband because of the secrecy aspect. My husband withdrew any kind of affection toward me once intimacy stopped - just when I could have done with more support/affection etc. I tried desperately to put things right by taking hrt but it didn't make any difference. Living more like housemates now. I have young dc in the mix, it feels like my life has been turned upside down and I'm awaiting therapy. I don't know what the answer is op but it is good you've recognised it.

Mine recovered when I started using vagifem, which is a tiny local dose of oestrogen. I'm not on any other sort of HRT.

onlyconnect · 01/02/2021 22:25

Errolthedragon is that something you get in prescription? If do was it prescribed because you told your GO about low sex drive?

OP posts:
onlyconnect · 01/02/2021 22:25

GP not GO

It's prescribed, it's for vaginal atrophy/dryness. I'd not mentioned libido to the GP - mine wasn't exactly gone, more not bothered, but the vagifem perked it up!

picklemewalnuts · 02/02/2021 07:56

There's a cream you can use instead of vagifem that doesn't involve a plastic applicator and blister pack per treatment.

onlyconnect · 02/02/2021 08:38

picklemewalnuts do you know what it's called?

I believe there's now an alternative to vagifem which has a reusable applicator, I'm going to ask about it when I can but I'm not messing about with my repeat prescriptions at the moment!

slidingdrawers · 02/02/2021 08:55

Ovestin is an alternative to Vagifem. It is a cream based local oestrogen with a reusable applicator.

picklemewalnuts · 02/02/2021 11:48

Yes, Ovestin.
